I'm about to get a new computer this year. I've been waiting for the
price of the new system to drop to my price range, at which time I'll
get a new HP system with a newer windows version on it.


And the one I'm using now would become the BBS.


I was waiting for the end of the year, at which time I'll probably
get the new system for just over $300 at Best Buy.


I already have a HP laptop (or `notebook' or whatever they call it) with
Windows 7 on it. So I could definitely do this within several days or a
week at the most.

I can probably get the software for free, and have a couple of friends
who ran BBS's in the past and would help me set up.


I can almost count on the fingers of both hands the number of people
who's names are seen regularly in some of the echoes I take.


Many of them don't even post regularly. I'm wondering if the monetary
outlay and the bother would even be worth going to just to `tweak'
Cassell's (and a few others) nose.


Fido is pretty dying out. Many of the echoes that were once thriving
are now dead. The only posts in them are Cassell posting up the
rules in them now and again. He's completely changed the intended
purpose of many of them such that they no longer interest anyone.


Many of the local people who once participated in Fido regularly as
I do (up till now) have withdrawn. And you'd be surprised at how
many of them withdrew because of Cassell.


A lot of those scattered around the country who were enjoyable to
talk to on a daily basis, are now gone...moved on to other things.


For quite a while now, I've been thinking of dropping Fido myself.


Very few people are actually taking part in Fido anymore. Many of
the arguments are the same old tired thing. Who started a `coup'
to take over which echoe moderatorship. What `zone' is better,
zone 1 or zone 2. They've had the same back-biting argument in
this echo alone, going on for several years now, between those in
Europe and the `coterie' in the U.S.


Those who insist on certain demeanors being followed under the
threat of banishment or feed cut, think nthing of accusing
others of outrageous offenses like child molesting, or doing
sex with sheep.


The same person who decries any insulting or outright hostility
from any user toward another user, thinks their position as a
high muckety-muck Fido gives them license to ignore their own
rules, and display such hostility toward anyone they choose.


The term `feet of clay' comes to mind.


Fido is dying out for many reasons. And I can't help thinking
this is probably one of them.
