Basically that is correct. As is san Jose and Campbell. Small towns that
wouldn't have anybody in them as they have in Oakland. There are only two
big cities on the bay, San Francisco and Oakland. All the rest are suburbs
of the big two.

As the crow flys, you would cross the bay from Oakland. Driving, you have
to go around the south end of the bay to get from Oakland to Santa Clara.
Or you could take the long way around and hop on BART and go through SF
before you head south to Stanford.
