Ärende: Re: Life Under the Democr
=================================
TR> Typically, those who own such areas that involve a harvest of some sort
TR> do not hire Americans, because they cannot cheat Americans like they
TR> can a foreign worker.

It is paid by the job there, not by the hour.

TR> They don't hire Americans because they can't work them ten or twelve
TR> hours a day and not pay overtime.

There is no overtime, just a lump sum. The quicker you're done, the quicker you
can move to the next orchard.

TR> They don't hire people who drive to and from, because they want
TR> their workers living ON the work sight where they have a large
TR> amount of control over them.

This past summer I've seen well-organised families with campers and pretty
large RVs, they were very well organised and mobile.

TR> They usually don't hire American workers, period. I know....I've tried
TR> to work for a few farmers before and they normally do not hire people
TR> they can't treat like slave labor.

TR>WD>* The vacation hotels in the national parks cannot function without
TR>WD>foreigners because Americans will not work for that kind of money

TR> That isn't true. I've worked in both state and national parks, and the
TR> pay is excellent.

Working in a national park which is controlled by the Department of the
Interior is one thing, working for a private concession in that park is another
thing.

The past summer I was in both Glacier and Yellowstone ... Romanians,
Bulgarians, Tsjech, Russian, Latvia, Estonia ... all European students on a
"cultural exchange program" sponsored by the State Department. It used to be
American college students who were happy to chat about their plans in life and
you'd put an extra buck on the table for their tip.

TR> 3. Will work like a slave for less-than-minimum wages, without a home
TR> life, living in a hovel on the employer's property, no benefits, and
TR> paying out of their wages a kick-back to the employer for the honor
TR> of living in a drafty, sometimes dirt-floor shack, many times without
TR> running water or electricity, and having to eat food not fit for a rat!

That sounds lihe the Boy Scout Camp I've been to for so many years.

TR> It was coming out that she and her husband were paying as little as
TR> 67 cents an hour!

At a Boy Scout Camp you earn $0.83 an hour.

TR> They were employing under age children for hard labor!

The average age of staffers at a Boy Scout Camp is 15, report for duty at
6:45am, go to bed by 11pm. Mexicans picking an orchard have better conditions.

TR> They fired any workers who dared to speak out on their unsafe
TR> conditions.

Sounds like a Boy Scout Camp.

TR> They forced their workers to work overtime at night without any
TR> advanced notice.

Yep, Boy Scouts of America.

TR> They had different pay scales for different employees doing the same
TR> job! It was according to the whim of the `managers'.

Indeed, BSA.

TR> They did nothing about working conditions even after it was raised
TR> by the union.

There are no unions protecting the rights of BSA workers.

TR> I lived in Arizona and New Mexico, and worked for a few big farmers
TR> running
TR> plows, fertilizers, harvesters, reapers.....back in the early 1970's.

TR> The wages they paid me, and the wages they paid workers who did the
TR> picking and boxing were two different things. For the day and age I
TR> made pretty good money.

You've said it yourself, "early 70-ies" and "that day and age" ...
