There are some things that men took with them to their
grave.  Unlike FDR, Harry Truman was not interested in
becoming President of the World.  Of course, FDR had
kept Truman in the dark about the conspiracy of the
Troika (FDR, Stalin, Churchill).  And Stalin sure as
heck was not going to tell Truman about it.  Churchill
was out of a job (Britons had thrown him out of office
after the war) and had no longer had protection from
being prosecuted for the poisoning of FDR if caught,
so he too kept his mouth shut.

He thought he was being smart, showing off what Russians
were capable of.  But I topped that.  Using real American
ingenuity, me and a group of other high school kids walked
into the Russian embassy in Washington DC unescorted and
with no adults anywhere around.  Created quite a stir,
grown-ups starting to run about pointing fingers at
other grown-ups and shouting at each other in a strange
language totally incomprehensible to us.

And then an elderly guy (Andrei Gromyko) appeared behind
bullet-proof glass and asked us, in English, who we were
and how we got into the place.  So we told him, we were
high school kids on a trip to the nation's capital and
the door was open with nobody standing outside so we
walked right in.  He then stared at us in disbelief and
said three words - in English - "Crazy American cowboys"
- and shook his head just like a bear.

Rather than getting angry and having us thrown out,
Gromyko was a nice guy.  He had his staff give us a
whole bunch of Russian literature, most of which we
could not read because it was in Russian, but some
was in English.  I especially enjoyed reading the
book about Lenin, a nice hardbook edition printed
in Moscow.  And the pictures in Soviet Life.  Oh,
how I wish I was a kid again ...
