Would you be so daring as to give a manger set
with three black wise men, a black Joseph, a black
Mary, and a little black Jesus to a white family
for Christmas?

If you ever do such a thing, the white family might
question as to how you came upon such a manger set.
And then they might question as to why you would
give a white family a black manger set rather than
a white manger set.  Especially if you are a white
man rather than a black man.

Of course, it could be that you were returning from
a trip to Africa ...

The fact of the matter is that most things (not
just dolls) are made with the "white" image in mind.
It is all part of white privilege.  The vast majority
of toys that are made are done so with the dominant
white culture in mind.  Not just in this country,
but everywhere in the world.

Even if you could find a doll with "black" skin
tone, the hair and clothes would be pretty much the
same as "white" dolls.  Not only that, but the skin
tone of dolls that are non-white are never as good
as the skin tone of dolls that are "white".

Have you ever been to Asia?  I have.  Do you know
what dolls most Asians (Japanese, Taiwanese, Filipinos,
etc.) prefer to buy?  They buy the "white" dolls rather
than the "Asian" dolls.  Is it because the "white" dolls
are prettier than the "Asian" dolls?  Is it because the
"white" dolls are better made than the "Asian" dolls?

Maybe it is because Asians have more "white" dolls
to choose from rather than a severely limited selection
of "Asian" dolls.

Good luck in finding an Asian doll.
Especially when it comes to Barbie dolls.
The other kind of dolls are fairly easy
to find ...

Strange as it might sound, even infants recognize differences
in race.  As adults, we like to think that race is something that
is taught, but we have forgotten how we once thought as a child
ourselves.  That is not the same as saying a child is racist.
The results of studies can be surprising, even shocking.

What a Doll Tells Us About Race

Children are raised by adults.  And we like to
think we have taught our children well.  But maybe
it is the adults who should be taking lessons from
the children ...
