I'm from Louisiana, ahd have been to Avery Island several times.
Avery Island is really a salt dome, not really an island, but that
doesn't matter.  I was friends with Frank McIlhenny, who met his
demise some years ago in a very strange and awful manner while
camping on top of a water tower.

One never really knows history no matter how much one studies
history, as it is constantly being interpreted and reinterpreted
as time goes on.  As such, I tend to listen to multiple voices
(including the voices in my head) in order to give me a sense
of the past, as history is not just a study of facts (facts as
interpreted by who and for what?).

Alligators are fascinating creatures, and best to be observed
first hand in the wild.  If you have never done so, it is an
experience like none other.  The late Steve Irwin actually swam
with alligators in the Florida Everglades, which might seem
dangerous but actually is (sort of) safe.

If ever you find yourself being chased by an alligator, do
not run in a straight line.  If you do, the alligator will win,
as they can run quite fast when hungry.  Best to run zigzag, as
alligators have to stop in order to change course.

Swimming with the alligators is a different story.  A young
fellow I know, er knew, had the idea to do so, and at the ripe
old age of 18 jumped into the bayou and got a good five minute
swim before losing an arm.  Of course, that did not stop him,
as he went through rehabilitation and got a prosthetic limb,
doing the same feat again only with a slew of reporters
and photographers present, getting a double page spread
published in the Sunday newspaper for his efforts.
