Tell that to the 5,000+ workers who were laid off
the other day in the Oil Patch.  And that is just
the beginning of the layoffs if prices continue
to be as low as they are now.

The state of Louisiana is broke.  So broke that
our colleges and universities have become nothing
more than glorified high schools.  With the current
price of oil being what it is today, those same
colleges and universities will have their budgets
cut even more, making them more like grammar schools
than anything representing higher education.

And then there is health care, or rather access
to quality health care, which has become virtually
nonexistent for the poor and middle class.  The
governor has already done away with our charity
hospital system, and he refuses to make any kind
of allowance for expanded medicaid, so the poor
are better off dead.  As for the middle class,
the costs for premiums has continued to rise to
the point of being unaffordable, with higher
deductables to go along with those higher costs.
As such, the middle class are paying more for
less.  If something is not affordable, it is
not accessable.

You see, the state of Louisiana, like most other
states, must have a balanced budget.  And the
Louisiana legislature, in all its infinite wisdom,
balances the budget by estimating the cost of oil.
Or rather, estimating what the cost of oil will
be for the upcoming fiscal year.  The governor
of Louisiana, who is really a king rather than
a governor (thanks to Huey P. Long), underfunds
projects he does not like (or cuts the funding
out altogether).  And then he gets to blame
somebody else when he gets criticized.  Today,
that somebody else is always Obama, but that's
another story.

When the state of Louisiana wants to be rich,
with roads paved with gold, it estimates the price
of oil as being $150 a barrel or something like
that.  And then, after it wins the bid to host
the Super Bowl, the governor makes a deal with
the owner of the New Orleans Saints to let him
rent out office space to the state.  Not to
mention giving him free rent for use of the
Superdome on game day.

We do not need oil to survive in this state.
What ws need is football.  And the way to do
that is to do away with all those needless
degree programs that colleges and university
programs offer and just have one degree in
football.  Along with basketball, given that
New Orleans does have an NBA team called
the Pelicans.

I would add baseball, but only LSU has a
decent baseball team, having won six NCAA
championships.  New Orleans does have a
minor league team called the Zephyrs, but
they remind me of a roller coaster I used
to ride when I was a kid at Ponchartrain
Beach.  That was a wicked roller coaster,
called The Zephyr, which went really high,
and then almost a straight drop to the
bottom, making your stomach so queasy
you almost drown in your own vomit on
your way down.

And to think Mayor Nagin wanted to bring it
back after Hurricane Katrina.  Aaarrgghhhh!
