Southern states revolted against the rule of Abraham
Lincoln, whom Southerners felt (rightly or wrongly) was
a traitor to their cause.

Abraham Lincoln allowed slavery to continue throughout
the course of the war, and even promoted it in his famous
Emancipation Proclamation, with Louisiana being the guinea
pig for his "experiment" to become the model state for
all America.

Go ahead.  Read the Emancipation Proclamation for yourself.
Abraham Lincoln did not care for Black folks.  And neither
did his successor, Andrew Johnson, who was every bit as much
a racist as Linooln.

Do you know who hated slavery?  "Stonewall" Jackson.  He
held very strong religious views, never owned slaves, and
thought it a sin for anybody else to do so.  Do you know
who else hated slavery?  Robert E. Lee.  The only slaves
he owned were those he owned by inheritance, which lasted
all of a handful of seconds as he freed them immediately
upon becoming their master.

Rich, white, plantation owners (in the north and the
south) wanted to keep slaves, as slaves were property.
Very expensive property.  The Dred Scott Decision made
sure that such pieces of property could never be defined
as persons.

Abraham Lincoln claimed to be an Abolitionist.  And indeed
he was, a full twenty years before becoming president.
And no slave owner was going to elect an Abolitionist to
be president.  So how did Abraham Lincoln go about getting
their support?

Well, for that you have to read the Republican Platform
of 1856.  Abraham Lincoln made a speech at the convention
in which he told his audience that Black folks in America
should be relocated to Guatemala, where they would have
their very own country.

In 1861, Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office as
president.  He was a minority president, having received
only a third of the vote due to Democrats splitting their
own vote (electoral college rules in US politics).

What Lincoln did was to encourage slave owners in the
northern states to sell their slaves to slave owners in
the southern states.  And then abolish slavery in those
northern states.  Leaving only Louisiana as the slave
state where all good slaves could be found, bought,
and sold.

Of course, Southern slave owners would have no one to
sell their slaves to, meaning economic ruin for them.

The federal view was that states have no right to secede
from the union.  That is why there was never a US Ambassador
to the Confederate States of America.

After the war, CSA President Jefferson Davis was hunted
down by US troops, apprehended, and charged with treason.
But he was never tried or convicted, as US President
Andrew Johnson allowed his Southern friend the courtesy
to retire from public life in Biloxi, Mississippi -
while also allowing CSA Vice President Alexander
Stephens to become Governor of Georgia.

Which was never recognized by the United States -
or any other nation - even though England and France
did briefly threaten to do so.

Southern states never left the union, their attempt
to do so having been unsuccessful.

The Southern `offense' sputtered out when Lee failed
to take Gettysburg.  Up until that point, the South
had managed to take on the best the Union had to offer.
But Lee miscalculated, choosing to withdraw his forces
rather than force the win at Gettysburg.

Lee's reasons were understandable, from a military
viewpoint, as Gettysburg was a draw, Lee's forces having
been depleted as well as the Union forces.  Had he done
his homework, he would have understood that going for
broke was the South's only chance of securing victory
in the war.  With the forces Lee had left at Gettysburg,
he had enough to take Washington DC - and the surrounding
areas, as no Union troops would have dared confront him.

US President Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet, along with
Congressional leaders, would have been forced into exile
in Canada.  A negotiated settlement would have followed,
with the Confederate States of America being recognized
as a separate, sovereign and independent state.

Well, it is true that Black folks did turn out in droves to
vote for their guy.  And you would, too.  If you were Black.

Irish (and dead people in Chicago) turned out in droves
to vote for Jack Kennedy when he ran for President.

Italians turned out in droves to vote for Rudy Giuliani
when he ran for the Republican nomination for president.

Greeks turned out in droves to vote for Michael Dukakis
when he ran for US President, and would have won had Blacks
bothered to vote.

Alcoholics turned out in droves to vote for George W. Bush
when he ran for US President, who only won because five
justices of the US Supreme Court were also drunk when they
voted.
