Ärende: Flag Ban Resolution Vetoed

Hello Everybody,

Even though the UC Irvine Student Government Association had
passed, by a 6-4 vote, to ban all national flags (including
the American flag) from its lobby, and had the full support
of at least 60 professors and 1,200+ students and others,
the resolution was vetoed by the executive council of ASUCI.

There is also a letter of support that can be viewed online,
signed by 60+ professors, as well as 1,200+ others.  Here is
a portion of that letter -

"We write to support the six members who offered the resolution
to remove national flags from the ASUCI lobby.  The university
ought to respect their political position and meet its obligation
to protect and promote their safety.  The resolution recognized
that nationalism, including U.S. nationalism, often contributes
to racism and xenophobia."

But you know how things work in America.  Word gets out, Fox
News steps in, thugs make noise, and threats are made.

"This is more or less uncontroversial scholarly point, and
in practice the resolutionhas drawn admiration nationally from
much of the academic community."

Must be the liberal media, hyping this stuff up!  Imagine a
bunch of students getting rid of the American flag from the
lobby of the main campus and calling it a good thing!  And
to think that professors, each of them armed with a PhD,
could bamboozle an entire community to think the students
are geniuses!

The letter did go on to say that the flag ban resolution has
led to a ton of "racist, xenophobic" comments and death threats
against students.  Could that be the reason why the executive
council chose to veto the resolution?  Out of concern for the
safety of the students?  I can't imagine what the UC Irvine
Facebook looked like, if the claims of it having been "filled
up with violent and racist remarks" were true.

On Thursday, a threat of violence forced a cancellation of
a meeting set by the university to discuss the flag ban.  Or
maybe that was just an excuse to have the meeting cancelled,
as this is what the Chancellor had to say -

"The safety of our campus and its students, faculty and staff
is and will always be our absolute, utmost concern.  There is
no gray area when it comes to threats of violence, they will
not be tolerated, andwe cannot allow our community to be put
at risk."
- Chancellor HOward Gillman said in a statement concerning
the flag ban

How nice it is to rule by decree.  No need for meetings of
any kind.  Just be The Decider, as GWB wanted to be when he
was prez/chancellor of a different kind of university.

If there were any real threats, who were those threats by?
And why was there not an investigation called for to look into
the matter?

Funny how things work.  When FoxNews complains, Chancellors
listen.  And the executive council acts (on orders from the
king/chancellor/decider).
