Cops are there to do a job. Being `law-abiding' also means being cooperative
with law enforcement. After all....they're out there for you...so why give
them a hard time?


Just before this past Christmas I was laying down taking a nap one afternoon
and was awakened by loud pounding on my door, and somebody shouting to `open
up'.


When I sat up on the edge of the bed I could hear several people outside my
door, and almost got a .44 revolver I keep in a drawer near the bed till I
snuck a peek out the window on that side of the bedroom. There were about 5
sheriff cars parked out front! So I go to the front door and there's six or
seven deputies out there. One tells me they have a warrant to search my place,
so I stepped outside and sat at a picnic table thats right outside the front
door, while a deputy with a dog went in and looked around.


I live in a pretty rural area with few houses around, but I live on my former
employers' property that has three houses involved. The house nearest me
had some guys staying there who it turned out were into heroin, and had been
being watched by the sheriff for quite a long time. The deputies' interest
in me was they had followed me in unmarked cars several times, knew I lived
here, and as the house they were concerned with is only about maybe 50 feet
away from my place, they couldn't determine my connection with those
they were watching, if any. They knew `who' I was through the license plate
on my car, but as I have no record they didn't know how I fit into their
investigation.


Anyway...the dog had a quick look around, probably wasn't inside for more than
8 or 10 seconds, came out and didn't even take a `sniff' of me, just went back
near the car it had gotten out of.


Turned out there had been an armed robbery with an assault-type weapon one of
these guys had, and the sheriff's drug investigation was terminated to take a
few of them into custody on the dope charges.


It was a quick, easy encounter, no bad words or threats. I was silently glad
I'd peeked out the window before going to the door. If I had the gun with
me when I opened the door, no telling what might have happened.


I was polite to them (seven deputies with guns pointing at you? Be polite!),
and when they saw I was no threat or troublesome, things went pretty easy.


As we were talking I looked around at them and realized they'd probably
been checking me out for some time. I recognized a few of them as I'd
seen them here and there recently, without knowing they were LEO's.


It was a weird experience. But a little polite conversation, and cooperation
goes a long way to making an encounter with cops end with nobody getting hurt,
and no bad feelings on either side.


Its all up to the individual. Cops only escalate `their' behavior when `you'
escalate yours.
