Interestingly enough the 'problem' of the Internet can also be part of the
'solution', as I see it. If the Internet is the medium that interconnects
most users in 2015 it's also the medium that offers Fidonet the best chance
of engaging with folks interested in 80's/90's style networking.

That's why I have been making noises about fidonet orientated websites in the
hope we can collectively ensure they are as up to date and inviting to
interested visitors as we can make them.

Mmmm.. Well it can't be helping the situation can it? I agreee with you it
won't be the only reason for why the public chooses to engage with Fidonet
(or not).

Regardless of where you go online Ross there's always going to be some folks
who choose to behave in a way that others find objectionable. I think Fidonet
is no exception to this, but neither is it exceptional in that behaviour.

I enjoy a number of good conversations with folks across several echoareas in
the network. They choose to conduct themselves in a manner that appeals to me
and we happily chat about all sorts of stuff. I mention this because some
would have me believe that Fidonet is full of anger, confrontation and
disagreement. That has not been my experience of the network.

And yet Fidonet is unique. It has a history and a facinating story to share.
It touched a lot of people's lives in it's heyday and is still in exsistence
today.

Of the users and sysops I have spoken to about BBS and Fido and ask them the 
question "what is the appeal?" .... they talk of enjoying a return to simpler
times, of interacting with others in a no 'pop-up / banner free' enviroment
where the focus is on the plain text message.

We don't necessarily need to offer something new in 2015 I suspect we
should be working harder to reaquaint folks with the network and invite them
to try something they last used some time ago.
