The issue is reprint permissions.  An author owns the copyright.
In this case, Tom Jennings owns the copyright for the dog-with-diskette
artwork.  The entity known as "Nick Kill" claims he/she has "permission"
to reprint said artwork, but refuses to show said "permission".  That
tells me that no such "permission" has ever been granted.

You would be mistaken.  Copyright lasts the lifetime of the
author + 75? years.  And then there is the Mickey Mouse rule,
a rule passed by Congress giving Disney the copyright for
Mickey Mouse forever.

Copyright is valid worldwide due to international agreements.
For example, North Korea violated copyright law a few weeks ago
when it put on a production using Disney characters.  However,
I doubt that Disney will be able to collect.

Trademarks are only valid within each country, and then only
for a short period of time in comparison with copyrights.

The name FIDO is public domain, and can mean whatever one wants
it to mean.  Some folks even name their dog "Fido", although Cajuns
prefer "Phideaux".

That is a name applied to a particular product.
The name Apple can be applied to various products,
such as Apple computers, Apple records, etc.

However, the dog-with-diskette is artwork, created by an individual.
And that individual owns the copyright for that artwork.  Even if no
form had been filled out or payment made to the US Copyright Office.

Wha'?  Janis/Nick folded her rag?  That would be cause for celebration!

I do not recognize Janis' publication as being legitimate.  Most
others view her rag in the same light.  She did what she did in an
effort to denigrate Björn Felten.  Very childish and immature.
