When you cross the American/Canadian border, there's a fence ... a really high
fence.
 
On the Canadian side there's an office with a customs-, immigration- and
agricultural officer.
 
On the American side there is always a complete village or town supporting the
American services, in one instance which I've visited even with stores, a
school, ...
 
I'm not exactly certain why that fence is there, why it is that high and why it
spans from the eastcoast to the westcoast.
 
To keep Americans in? To keep Canadians out?
 
Anyway, everytime I pass that border into Canada, I feel like ... welcome. The
scenery is different, the area better maintained, the streets are nicer, the
roads are nicer, the grass is cut along the roads ...
 
When I go the other way I'm treated like a potential criminal ... passport,
driver's license, who's the owner of the car, where are you going, where do you
come from, what's the purpose, why do you come to the US that often, shut down
the engine, put your hands on the steering wheel, etc, etc...
 
Belgium borders to the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France.
 
There are no fences, you have no real clue where the border is. There are no
stops, no identity checks, no stupid questions. You don't even slow down on the
highway ... the only difference may be the material of which the road is made,
traffic markings and a welcome sign.
 
But when you cross into the UK, the same histeria starts all over. Also when
you leave the UK, not when you enter France from the UK.
