Ärende: Quoting problem
=======================
MvdV>> And now that you mention subject lines, it would help if your
MvdV>> crappy software did not truncate the subject line at 20
 MvdV>> characters....

ml> why don't you grow up and understand that not everyone wants to run
ml> the same stuff that you run?

MvdV> Why don't you grow up and stop shooting at the messenger?

if i were shooting at the messenger, there would only be one shot and then
possibly the sound of a shovel...

ml> there is nothing wrong with his software or his chosen offline
 ml> reader...

MvdV> Bullshit. The specs are clear. 72 characters for the subject
MvdV> line. Software that truncates at 20 characters is cripple ware.

the software they are using doesn't follow FTN specs... it has its own specs...
that software is compliant with FTN specs because it doesn't implement them at
all in any way, shape, form or fashion...

MvdV> I don't understand why you defend sysops that willingly and
MvdV> knowingly continue to use such crap. Alternatives have been
MvdV> available for ages and for free.

i defend them for the same reason that i (would) defend (to the death) your
right to say and do the things you do... i may not agree with those things and
i may argue or discuss them until we're both blue in the face but that doesn't
mean that i'm going (to try) to stop you from saying or doing them...

ml> what is wrong is your's and other's apparent reliance on new tech to
ml> do what everyone did automatically in the past...

MvdV> "New tech"?! Bullshit. The feature of reply chaining has been
MvdV> part and parcel of echomail processing software for ages.

yeah, and? it used to all be done by the subject line... and it is "new tech"
for most general purposes... IIRC it was introduced with the JAM message base
format...

MvdV> Dale's stuff is broken because it messes up the reply chaining.
MvdV> Chaining by MSGID and REPLY kludge does not work because the
 MvdV> REPLY kludge is missing,

so what... i've been living with it since 1993 and i've not complained about...
but then again, i don't sort my message bases into some artifical order by
date, subject or thread...

MvdV> Chaining by subject does not work, because it truncates at 20
 MvdV> Chars.

yeah, and? you can't tell that a short subject message belongs with others when
the first 20 characters are all the same? that's rather pitiful, michiel...
rather pitiful...

MvdV> He says it works for him. Probably true since the compare at his
MvdV> site only looks at first 20 chars of the subject line.

not his *site* michiel... his reader... his site is another machine where his
bbs is located... i'm starting to wonder if you've lost the perspective of what
a bbs user has to work with and what they see on a bbs...

MvdV> But is does not work for others. Failing reply chaining is
 MvdV> annoying.

that sounds like a personal problem... does your linker know only one way of
linking the messages in your message base? it should know at least two method
and it should be using the second or tertiary ones when the primary one
fails...

speaking of broken "reply chaining"... where were you in the discussion of
synchronet with rob swindell and its broken MSGID generation in messags that do
not have a MSGID??

MvdV> Defending that is not good for "the smooth operation of the
 MvdV> network".

reading messages has nothing to do with the operation of the network... tossing
and linking messages is a local operation... it has nothing to do with the
transfer of the mail from one machine to another...

ml> many of you beat on xxCarol for so long and she finally did change
 ml> her software

MvdV> She was using crippleware that had the annoying "feature" of
MvdV> truncating quoted lines. This had led to a missing "not" in one
MvdV> of my quotes, so that it seemed I wrote the opposite.

yes... so where is your voice in the discussions about dbridge's and
synchronet's editors which both do the same exact thing?

MvdV> Shooting the messenger won't make the problem go away.

of course not...

ml> but where is she today?

MvdV> Probably where the nodelist says she is: Viginia Beach VA.
 MvdV> Whatever VA means. Vancouver?

uncle google can easily tell you that ;)
hint: vancouver is in canada... i doubt that a net south of DC is in canada ;)

ml> and what software is whe using? is it compliant?

 MvdV> I don't know, I haven't see any messages from her in a while.

hint: don't get "swindelled" :)

ml> i don't think so since it is synchronet and i've already shown that it
ml> is broken WRT FTS-0009 but did anyone else jump on that train with me?
 ml> nooooooo...

 MvdV> I wasn't aware you needed help...

it would have been nice for others to have been backing me up... i am/was just
one voice and had two or three opponents to deal with... nice going... what are
they doing today? nothing about the problem... nice going...

MvdV> I can't make Dale change his antiquated software. But you can't
MvdV> stop me from saying it is cripple ware. You can takes pokes at
MvdV> the messenger, but it will not stop me from saying that
MvdV> encouraging people to keep using 20 year old cripple ware is not
MvdV> good for the smooth operation of the network.

you've gotten "smooth operation of the network" mixed up with something else...
