Any more, you wont get away with that.  People used to do it here as well. 
Challenge the police on training and calibration.  Most of the time the police
lost.  No more.  Those things MUST be calibrated and inspected at specific
times, and the officer using it, must also be calibrated, errr, trained at
specific times <G>

We are something like the US in that regard, but also different.  This city I
live in, uses the provincial police to patrol our streets, and crimes.  We had
our own force at one time, until the Mayor found himself under investigation
for something he said or did (I forgot which), so he proposed to disband the
force, and got his way.  Took a long time but he made it happen.

As I remember you could not turn right on a red light in some states.  That may
have changed in the meantime.  Quebec was that way as well.  It has been many
years since I drove there so don't know if you can now or not.  However, you
better know how to read French because all of the traffic signs are in French
only.  Its the only place I have ever seen a stop sign that said Arret, (with
cirumflex) instead of the International STOP
