A sysop in Hawaii inadverdently left his system wide open when
he left for a tour of duty in Iraq.  As a result, an individual
(whose real name is Bill Kochman) set himself up under the alias
"Jeff Snyder" pretending to be a sysop from Guam.

I have always been in favor of allowing individuals to use
an alias/handle to send/receive messages in fidonet.  Not just
sysops, but also non-sysops.  My gripe against Bill Kochman,
Ross Cassell, and Janis Kracht was the dishonesty they showed,
to all of fidonet, by allowing such antics to take place.

But hey.  Since they allowed Bill Kochman to do it, might
as well let anybody and everybody else do it, too.

So go ahead.  Leave your system wide open, pre-configured
to allow open access for individuals to set up an account,
with an alias/handle of their own choosing, as well as to
pick whatever echoes they want to participate in (both read
and write access), and then throw away the key.

There is, or was, a professor in Australia who did just that
years ago.  Set it all up, let his students run the show, and
then went on to other things.  His bbs ran for years.  Until
somebody discovered he died.  Not sure how long he had been
dead before discovery was made, as students are not always
timely with upkeep.

Facebook had a billion people making contact this past Monday.
One billion.  I doubt fidonet can get a hundred in a week.

But with an open system, allowing anybody and everybody to
use an alias/handle, along with full access to all echoes,
the possibilities are endless.  You would get all the credit,
of course.

This tip, coming from the brainchild of fidonet, is a freebie.

Has been for years.  Or didn't you notice?

I don't even want to think of what he will
do to Cajuns.  On the other hand, there
is a fellow from Louisiana who is running
for prez.  I'm just glad it ain't me.  :)
