          We have a Braun fever thermometer made in Germany.  According to the
instruction book, published in 1999, this thermometer was set to Fahrenheit at
the factory but can be reset to Celsius by the user.  There is nothing obvious
on the exterior of the thermometer suggesting it can be reset.

          The initial discussion was about cheaper imports.  But...

          I have to agree that it is unlikely Braun would retool their factory
to suit market xxx or yyy.  I think it's more likely they'd adjust the setting
according to what the majority of customers in xxx or yyy seem to prefer.  Our
copy of the instruction book is in English, French, and Spanish... just as I'd
expect if they're selling the product in North America.  If they're selling it
in Europe, they probably set it to Celsius.  And while they're translating the
instructions into Dutch, Swedish, or whatever they can easily bury the details
of how to reset this item in the fine print or leave them out altogether.  ;-)
