The Eagles had some great tunes, but were limited to the mid 70s
and early 80s as to their influence.  David Bowie's career spanned
six decades, his influence being multi-generational, rather than
a few short years.

Playing hit songs to the same crowd as the crowd got older was
the Eagles ticket for success.  Bowie took his songs to multiple
generations, not just to one particular audience.  Not only that,
but he also played multiple venues, not just rock, expanding into
country, disco, and other forms that cannot even be described.

The Eagles music never changed.  It was excellent music, but limited
in scope to a particular audience of a specific time.  Bowie's music
was universal to many audiences spanning many generations or periods
of time.  Rather than a chameleon (as some of his critics liked to
say), Bowie was a pioneer, always breaking barriers and expanding
horizons.

Bowie never imitated anyone, or anyone else's lifestyle.
His song "Rebel Rebel" is exemplary of what his real life
was, or was all about, in summation.

Hardly a chameleon by anyone's definition.
