very well choose to vote for somebody else.  And probably will.
Except for those who are truly retarded.

If Hillary Clinton (or any other candidate) is indicted, there
is no way that candidate will be able to convince his/her delegates
to remain committed to vote for him/her.

If Donald Trump (or any other candidate) does something so
embarrassing as to not being able to be elected, there is no
way that candidate will be able to convince his/her delegates
to remain committed to vote for him/her.

Things change.  Especially in politics.  Sometimes things change
so fast that it is impossible to keep up.  Politics is not an exact
science.  Never has been.  Never will be.  There are just too many
variables.

When a candidate suspends his/her campaign, he/she does so with the
full knowledge that whatever delegates are in his/her column will
vote for other candidates at the convention.  The reason why the
candidate chooses to suspend rather than end his/her campaign is
so that he/she will be welcome to attend and give a speech at the
convention, while not being obliged to make payments to staff and
workers for a campaign that was going nowhere.
