Ärende: What kind of nonsense is this?
======================================
BM> But the salt is distilled out and sinks to the bottom. Roughly 70% of all
BM> artic ice, glaciers and perment snow are freshwater. The older the ice,
the
BM> less salt. As the ice forms, the salt is pushed to the bottom and lies
 BM> along
BM> the bed of the ocean. The salinity in the oceans is what helps keep the
BM> climate stable. This is the issue with black ice which is a by-product of
BM> carbon emissions. It settles on the ice cauing it to melt faster. White
ice
 BM> reflects the sunlight.

BM> Depends. Salinity will affect the currents of the oceans. Example: The
Gulf
BM> Stream keeps running because the warmer water travelling north is
 BM> lighter than
BM> cold water, so it floats on top and keeps moving. As the current
 BM> approaches the
BM> northern Atlantic and disgorges its heat, it grows denser and sinks, at
 BM> which
BM> point it flows back to the south, crossing under the northbound Gulf
 BM> Stream,
BM> until it reaches the tropics to start the cycle all over again. This
 BM> cycle has
BM> allowed humans and other life forms to thrive across wide swaths of
 BM> formerly
BM> frozen continents over thousands of years. But if too much dilution
 BM> occurs, the
BM> water will get lighter, idling on top and stalling out the system. A
BM> contradictory trend: Some parts of the worldAs oceans are getting saltier.
BM> Researchers from the UKAs Met Office and Reading University reported in a
BM> recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters
that
BM> warmer temperatures over southerly sections of the Atlantic Ocean have
BM> significantly increased evaporation and reduced rainfall from Africa to
the
BM> Caribbean in recent years, concentrating salt in the water thatAs left
 BM> behind.
BM> In fact, the Atlantic in this region is about 0.5 percent saltier than
 BM> it was
BM> four decades ago. Possible cause, larger amounts of freshwater in the
north
BM> Atlantic moving the brackish point further south.

WOW! The above is an almost perfect translation of an article I wrote for a
Swedish magazine ten years ago.

Yes indeed. The major pump that drives the global current from north of
Iceland, via Africa and up to Alaska where it turns back, is located in the
deep water basin between Iceland and northern Norway. And it relies totally on
the salinity of the water just there.

In the late 1980s the US navy started noticing a distinct change in the
normal hissing sound from their chain of listening devices placed between
Iceland and Norway (to detect any Soviet sub movements) that was caused by the
return water from the pump. It obviously had more or less stopped already then.

The inertia of this gigantic flow of water will make it run without the pump
for maybe a century, but it will no longer flow as we've been accustomed to for
thousands of years. When the pump no longer pumps the water down to the "return
pipe" it will flow in all kinds of directions -- such as north-west between
Greenland and Canada, melting the ice
north of Canada.

And we in Scandinavia can no longer rely on the big conveyor belt to keep
our climate stable over the year. Without the predictable pump running, the
water goes anywhere and nowhere. :(
