Hello Everybody,

Do you know any alcoholics?  Or recovering alcoholics?  I'll
bet you do.  Many of those fine folks are members of Alcoholics
Anonymous, an organization that has been around since, like,
forever.  But how effective is AA in helping recovering alkies
stay off the bottle?  How really effective of an organization
is it?

Dr. Lance Dodes, author of "The Sober Truth: Debunking the Bad
Science Behind 12-Step Programs and th Rehab Industry", does not
think that Alcoholics Anonymous has been able to do much at all.
In an interview with Radio Boston, he explains how AA got its
foot in the door, and why it remains America's choice today -

How AA gained a place of privilege in Americaâ€Ös health culture:

LD: “In the 1930s, when AA first began to be established and when the
big book came out, almost all of the medical folks who looked at it
thought it was garbage, including the American Medical Association.
Ten years later, in the 1940s, they had completely reversed themselves,
the AMA was endorsing it. In 1951, AA was awarded a Lasker Prize for
its wonderful contribution to public health. In fact, there was no
science that changed between the 30s and 40s. So what changed? This
was the result of people like Marty Mann and, of course, Bill Wilson,
who founded AA, having fabulous marketing skills and making connections
with some very important people. The Rockefeller family, for example,
helped to give money to support the publication of AA and a large
number of institutions became imbued with the AA idea without any
proof. Once it got established, it remained. And that is true to this
day. If you look at state government agencies charged with addiction
treatment, including Massachusetts, youâ€Öll find that theyâ€Öre filled
with AA people. Youâ€Öre not going to get a scientific or a neutral
hearing about what to do.�

Scams and cons are not limited to recovery programs for alcoholics.
Another fine scam/con that is taking place today is the wide use of
statins.  Doctors everywhere are prescribing statins as their drug
of choice for their patients - including children - as statins are
claimed to be safe and harmless, with few or no side effects.

Today, 52% of all Americans have been classified as being either
pre-diabetic or fully diabetic.  With another 10% suspected of being
diabetic - but have never been tested.  That makes roughly two-thirds
of all Americans being either pre-diabetic or fully diabetic, most
of them being obese or overweight.  One of the reasons why the number
of diabetics is so high in the USA is due to the wide usage of statins.
The other main reason is the massive consumption of sugar.

Combine the two and you have a recipe for disaster.

Americans like 3 things in life -

* Beer
* Sugar
* Sex

Not necessarily in that order.

Americans get drunk on beer, get fat as a result, then
are prescribed statins, lose body mass, then their minds.

Not necessarily in that order.

American women sometimes do it on chocolate alone, with no
need of beer or statins.  Plus sex.  Gotta have sex.  Guys can
do without it.  But women?  Get real.

Sex and chocolate.  That is what makes women go.  Really.  Don't
believe me?  Cover yourself up in chocolate.  Then see how long it
takes for the woman of your dreams to lick it all up ...
