Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela, Argentina ...

America does not exist?  The pope is an American.  He might not
be the same kind of American you would like or want him to be.
But he is an American.  Donald Trump is also an American.  Just
like the pope.  But a man of a much different faith.  Ted Cruz
is an American, born in Canada.  Not sure if he qualifies as a
natural born citizen, but he is an American.

Classified as The Americas.  Plural.  More than one continent.
One could refer to the whole as being America.  But it would be
more proper to say The Americas, thus leaving no doubt.

There are several states in America.  Which America are you
referring to?  Would that be North America, South America, or
a combination of both?

There are several states in the Americas.  That statement is
clearer, leaving no doubt as to intention.

Your statement is non-specific.  But even if you intended it
as being specific, it is hardly accurate.

There are 46 states in the United States.  And 4 commonwealths.
How many are united remains an open question.

Years ago, on a beach in Hawai'i, I made the mistake of telling
a local Hawai'ian it was time for me to go back to the states.
Hawai'ians are big.  Very big.  And this one was huge.  Could have
easily squashed me.  Like a pineapple.  But instead, he decided to
play nice, allowing me to live.  All I had to do was endure a long
lecture by a very mad and angry Hawai'ian that Hawai'ians are
Americans and that Hawai'i is a state of the United States and
not some godforsaken island in the middle of nowhere.

Hawai'i is a Kingdom.  Or it used to be.  Once upon a time.
But we invaded, and took the islands from them.  And made those
islands our own.

Today, the natives want their land back.  And they are starting
the legal process to do so.  I am not sure if they will ever get
what they desire.  Southerners tried it, long ago, and we all
know what happened that time.

Texans threaten to secede, from time to time, but never do.
Alaskans also threaten to secede, from time to time.  But it'll
never happen.  The world might end, but we will still be united.
One America, for all the Americas.
