John Wilkes Booth was a stage actor who well understood the
use of make-up and costume.  It is known by historians that he
was granted at least two private audiences with "Babe" Lincoln
at the White House.

Early in her career as a politician, Lincoln did not understand
how to dress and act like a man.  Early photographs of her prove
the point.  Clean-shaven, scruffy-looking, haggardly-dressed.
Her debates with Douglas showed she was a gifted speaker, but
lacked the manly qualities necessary for survival in the world
of politics.

She spoke in a high-pitched, squealy voice, as most women do.
There are some recordings of her on file at the Smithsonian.
You can listen to them yourself.

John Wilkes Booth was her teacher in Washington DC.  Were his
visits with Lincoln strictly business?  Or did Booth mix business
with pleasure?  One can only guess.  But I do find it odd that
folks would accuse Booth of having shot Lincoln, when he had no
motive for doing so.  After all, he did have ample opportunity
before then, during the War.

Lincoln hated to be called Abe.  Do you know why?  Because people
derisively called her "Honest Babe Lincoln" - not being fooled by
her act at all.  As president, she insisted on being addressed as
"Mr. President" or "Abraham Lincoln" - never as "Abe".

After her untimely death, her body was placed in a closed coffin
and none were allowed to view the body afterwards.  The casket was
placed on display in the Capitol so people could pay their final
respects.  And then she was buried, with honors.

Mary Todd was unable to cope with the loss.  She had already lost
her brother in the Battle of Baton Rouge, killed by Union forces.
And now she had lost her lover (yes, "Babe" Lincoln was a lesbian).
She was left homeless, with nowhere to go.  So she was locked up
in a loony-bin, where she spent the rest of her days.

Four people, including one woman, were later apprehended and
prosecuted for the crime of executing President Lincoln.  They
were all hanged.

John Wilkes Booth escaped to West Texas and Mexico, where he
lived out the rest of his life.  His lawyer then claimed the body
on grounds of payment due, and had it stuffed.  It was then later
sold, as the lawyer deserved payment for his services.  The body
then later stolen, and nobody knows where it is today.
