There is a mistake in that list - Governor George W. Bush was never
elected pResident of the United States.  Of course, neither was Gerald
Ford.  But at least he was appointed by a legitimate pResident.

"Deficits don't matter." - Vice President Dick Cheney

Of course, Cheney was correct.  Deficits and debt are two different
things.  The last surplus the USA had was when Bill Clinton left
office.  And then, eight months into the GWB misadministration, the
surplus had been squandered and the USA went into a deficit.  And
that was before the events of 9-11.

Deficits are annual.  Debt is cumulative.

Austerity never works.  You have to spend money to make money.
Preferably somebody else's money.  Can't just cut taxes and hope
to continue providing the same services as before.  The population
continues to grow, as well as the needs of that growing population.

Food stamps are not welfare.  Food stamps help to insure a family
is able to get a balanced meal, so that nobody will starve or be
malnourished in this country.

We do have agricultural welfare.  Farmers are guaranteed 95% payment
of their crop, even if their crop is destroyed by natural disaster,
thanks to this subsidized program approved by the Republican-dominated
Congress.

This one act, to subsidize farmers, increased the value of farmland
to a minimum of $7500 per acre.  Who are those farmers who benefitted
from this act?  There are no more small farmers in the USA.  It is
all Big Business these days.

A small step.  A baby step.  But at least a step.

The USA does not have a universal health care system.
Obamacare is limited, and only for those who are in the
work force.  There is no public option, and as a result
some are left out, including the working poor.  The USA
does not have a single payer system, except in a limited
way with Medicare, which is for seniors and some disabled.
And Medicaid, the program for the poor, is extremely
limited in scope, and does not serve anybody well.
Pharmaceutical companies in the USA are free to set
and change the prices of their drugs at will.  There
is no regulation of this.  Insurance companies are now
subsidized by government, making their policies more
expensive (and unaffordable for out of pocket).  What
happens when people can no longer afford to pay for
health care?  Health care is no longer accessible.
If something is not affordable, it is not accessible.
Therefore, what difference does it make if government
claims to offer general health insurance?
