Smoking is an addiction.  Even if an individual wants to quit, and
decides to quit, it is not so easy as to just simply quit.  It takes
will-power.  Real will-power.  It takes most people several attempts
before they are able to finally quit.  Very few manage to do so on
their first attempt.  Even those who are most sincere.

Hardened criminals - those who are locked up in prison - are not
allowed to keep or use illegal drugs.  However, cigarettes are allowed.
Prison administrators know what will happen if those cigarettes are
taken away, or not allowed.  A riot will break out.  Big time.  An
uncontrollable riot.

Nicotine is an addictive drug.  Even more addictive than hardcore
drugs (banned substances).  Today, there are pharmaceutical products
available to help wean folks off nicotine.  But those products have
dangers of their own, including death.

Of those who quit smoking without the use of drugs, three out of
four relapse within six months.  Nine out of ten relapse within a
year.  But those one out of ten who last past a year generally
never bother to take another puff again.

It's easy to quit.  Anybody can do it.  Even the most active
smoker in the world can do it.  But, in most cases, those times
are usually only temporary.  I mean, even chain smokers do have
to take time out to sleep.

Former smokers are the most vehement anti-smokers there are.
The vast majority of former smokers view cigarettes and the
smell of cigarettes/cigarette smoke as nasty shit.  And that
is putting things mildly.

Addicts never realize they are addicted until after they have
permanently given up their addiction.  As such, many times they
never admit they are addicted until it is far too late.

And the first thing most babies do is become addicted to sucking
their mother's tits.  Today, we continue that same addiction by
sucking on the government's tits.  But that's another story for
another day.  ;)

It is also possible for a non-smoker to return to being
the smoker he/she was before.  And likely, in most cases,
excepting those who had successfully freed themselves for
over a year.
