having dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I am ashamed that President Truman chose to drop two atomic
bombs on a defenseless people.  A people who had clearly lost
the war, and had offered to surrender a full month before the
bombs fell.

War is hell.  People commit horrible acts during times of war.
Things they would never consider doing, or ever think themselves
capable of doing in normal times.  It was not just Japanese and
Germans who did this.  We did it, too.

But we could forgive the Germans.  We could forgive the Italians.
Not so much the Japanese.  They were gooks.  And Truman hated gooks.
He didn't much like black people either, but he hated gooks.

The military dictatorship of Japan had already been defeated.
The country was in ruins.  Tokyo was a heap of rubble, only the
Temple left standing.  The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki served no purpose to convince the Japanese to surrender,
as the Japanese had already offered to surrender a full month
before the bombs fell.  So why did President Truman nuke Japan?

Two reasons -

* President Truman hated gooks.
* President Truman wanted to send a message to Joe Stalin.

You see, FDR and Stalin had made a deal at Potsdam.  Stalin agreed
to wait two months after the fall of Germany before entering the fray
against Japan.

Stalin kept his word.  Two months after Germany surrendered, Stalin
ordered Soviet troops to engage the Japanese in Manchuria.  And then
Soviet troops began an invasion of Japan.

President Truman should have accepted the Japanese offer to surrender
in July 1945, rather than wait until the Soviets began its own invasion
of Japan.  But no.  President Truman wanted to incinerate as many of
those little yellow devils as he possibly could.

Curtis LeMay did not want President Truman to stop there.  LeMay
wanted Truman to nuke Russia.  Make Russia a vast wasteland.  Such
was the thinking of the Joint Chiefs of Staff back in those days.

We had The Bomb and the Russians didn't.  We should have nuked
the world when we had the chance.  Then we would have been Kings
of the Earth.

The Japanese offered to surrender - in July 1945.
President Truman rejected the Japanese offer.
The Soviets then began an invasion of Japan.
President Truman decided to stop the Soviets
by atomizing two Japanese cities - a clear
warning to Stalin that Russia was next.

Soviet troops refused to leave Japan after Hiroshima was atomized.
Soviet troops refused to leave Japan after Nagasaki was atomized.
Soviet troops remain in Japan to this very day.
In fact, Russia and Japan remain in a state of war.
Which should come as no surprise to anyone.

President Truman chose not to accept the Japanese surrender
until after it became obvious to him the Russians would never
leave Japan.
