Did Katrina take it?  My Aunt lived not far from Canal street and when the
storm was coming in I drove down to get her.  She had one surviving son in good
health and we drove down there to get her I will never forget the clouds were
ominous and scary looking.  That was my one and only time seeing New Orleans
the way it was... we left while you could still get out easily she packed what
she could and left her home boarded up.

We got back to Louisville and watched the horrors on TV and one month later her
son and I went back to check on the house because we couldn't reach any of her
neighbors.  It was gone save for a few bricks that we picked up and brought
back to her.

She passed in 2012, and her son passed away in October.  He was born there, she
married a gentleman there.  I think it broke their hearts... the New Orleans we
visited after that was not what I saw picking her up.  I know it has been
rebuilt, I want to go back... but I will always have that horrific memory of
finding her beautiful old home GONE... I mean it was GONE.  She wanted to stay
said she's been through storms before.  What neighbors that were left told
horror stories of having to swim through the ocean for their lives.  I know she
would be gone too if we didn't get her.  I'm thankful for that.
