The Cooking echo is not all about recipes.  It is primarily about a
group of people talking to each other -- just as they might do in each
other's home sitting around the kitchen table.  It is also a group of
people who for the most part have done exactly that at one time or
another-- namely meet with each other at some location for a get
together focused on sharing food with each other.

The recipes are secondary.  In fact, the echos that were focused on
recipes are essentially dead today.

I agree that you can easily find recipes on the internet these days.
What you don't get is friends of yours discussing their experiences with
food and related topics.

I scan Memories from time to time, and it seems to be a similar group of
friends -- with some overlap.  I think that many of them are "just"
users who get their echomail from a BBS in one form or another.

I don't know.  I do know that some non-sysops look at it, but keep out
of the discussions.

I figured as much, but had no way of knowing.

That may be true in your part of Z2, but although fidonet is greatly
diminished over the past decade it still has life and real users.
