The Japanese were fighting a hard, long and deadly retreat, one island
chain after another, and finally one island after another, slowly, slowly,
till it was the actual Japanese islands they were fighting on.

Had the war continued that way, many thousands of American would have died
in the process.  

Truman got  their attention with the first bomb. When no reaction came from
the first one the second one was dropped. That showed them they would lose
city after city until nothing was left. They surrendered. Unconditionally.

They were actually closer to it than even the Germans themselves realized
at the time.

Let them mourn. Seeing some of the prisoners who were finally liberated when
it all ended in the South Pacific, I had (and `have') no sympathy to spare
for the Japanese. nor would I have had sympathy for the Germans had we set
off a nuke on Berlin in 1945. The sight of those liberated from the Nazi
camps took all feelings of sympathy away.

When I was a little boy we lived in a small town in upstate New York called
Caledonia. On a dirt farm about 3 miles out of town. the war had recently
ended and a German family moved there after going through immigration and
all that. There was a grandmother, a daughter with three of her children. We
met them through the church we attended over in Avon, NY.

The war had been very vivid to them, the Nazis all too real. I was about 7 or
8 at the time. The grandmother didn't speak English but the daughter would
translate what she said. Some of the stories she told would have all the adul
adults in tears. I was too young to understand it all, but I did understand
that life in Germany under Hitler had been pretty harsh.
When I got older and read some of the books from both Allied writers and some
of the German's who'd lived it, I got the full impact of what it was. Even
todayI would not feel badly had we set off an A-bomb right on top of Hitler's b
bunker in the Reichstag's garden.

Russia
Ukrainia
Red China
Iran
Israel
and the occasional Islamic terrorists

with some nuclear device or other.

Did I see you say something about terrorists having no way to `deliver' such
a weapon?

I live in the San Diego California area, a `main target' of both Red Chinese
AND Russian nuclear attack plans.

Here we have one of the main Marine training camps (Pendleton), the U.S.
Navy's Seal training facility. A favorite vacation spot on Coronado Island
of mine is on the Silver Strand state beach. Right up on the Ocean. Also one
of the Navy Seal training facility's favorite training areas! 

Many a morning ( 4 or 5 AM, for god's sake!) I've been awakened by their
"....up boat!.....down boat!.....up boat!.....down boat.....INTO THE BOAT! P
Plop! Scramble! Scrape scrape!!!!....OUT OF THE BOAT!!! scramble scrape....
For'd double-time! trod-trod-trod.....up boat!trod trod.....down boat!trod trod
trod....."

I go and sit at Seaport Village, and have breakfast....out just across the 
bay are several Naval vessels....couple of aircraft carriers...some destroyers
.....a guided missile frigate or two...and I watch civilian boats go past
those ships with no heavy machinegun emplacements anywhere in sight that can
quickly train on the water around themselves. And I wonder...if a bunch of
terrorists could hijack two jumbo jets, steer them into the World Trade 
Center twin towers in one of  the biggest cities in the world, and kill over
3000 people in one fell swoop.....what's to stop them from obtaining a device
with nuclear capability....loading it onto a jumbo jet, doing a regular
landing procedure at San Diego International Airport (right there in the
vicinity, so anything a jumbo jet did would be seen as normal airport acti
activity), and setting off a nuke!

Or smuggling a nuke into the country over time, loading it on a civilian
pleasure boat, sailing around the harbor like any ordinary civilian craft,
and at the proper moment heading right for the side of a carrier  and d
detonating it!
 
The open potential is obvious for anyone to see, and there is a BIG Muslim
presence here!

The danger is real.
