Kentucky abolished common law marriages in 1852.  Those that were recognized as
valid had to take marraige vows at that time or were considered not married.

You also have to remember that KY is the World HQ of several baptist
denominations... including the United Baptists and the Southern Baptists, as
well as the Presbyterian Church.  The Southern Baptists and Presbyterians have
ther HQ here in Louisville the Presbyterians are more liberal and did not HQ
here until the 1980s.  Our laws in KY are influenced by nearly two centruries
of fundamental Baptist lawmakers.  Until 20 years ago we only had 8 "wet"
counties, even though we make most of the bourbon for the world only 8 wet
counties where you can legally buy alcholol.

No wonder we made the news during the Gay Marraige law with the clerk in Rowan
County... it's the seat of one of the more fundamentalist Baptist
denominations.

Trust me I get what you mean about the laws... we can't even get our state
governnment's representatives to pass any funding for the arts.  Thankfully
celebrities like Taylor Swift, Prince, Jessica Lawrence, and others that donate
generously to our Orchestra and other arts outlets in Louisville.  The state
representatives from other counties see any arts funding as "paying for
homosexuals to dance in their underwear in Lousiville".  

So common law marraiges in KY... NOPE we don't have them... and they don't
recognize them from other states as well.  KY also begrudingly accepting Gay
Marraige... but some has made it very hard for the Gays to get married.
