Ärende: Nodelist Distribution
=============================
Hello Allen,

JD>>> You are not part of Fido.

LL>> FidoNet is supported by both sysops and users, not one or the other.
LL>> As such, users are very much a part of FidoNet.

AP> Joe does have a point... if the systems who grant you access decided
AP> to pull the plug and go away you wouldn't have a soapbox to speak
 AP> upon.

If there was only one sysop in all of FidoNet that would be true.
But there are many more sysops in FidoNet that make up the whole.

AP> You have a point as well... users are important and many
AP> systems have folded because the user base had dwindled.

Without uers, there is no point of there being a FidoNet.

AP> Until you have ran and administrated a bbs system and know how they
AP> truly operate, there are no struggles of keeping an accurate
 AP> nodelist.

Without users, what is a bbs? Nothing! There is no community
without people! Why do you think CG Learn pulled the plug? He
wrote a message to all in ASIAN_LINK giving his reason as "Too
few users" - and he had been running a bbs for a very long time.

AP> It's probably more automated than moving the mail around.

With "Too few users" all a bbs would be doing is burning
up electricity. Really not worth the bother for a sysop to
pay any attention to keep up doing.

AP> Lee, you can be brilliant, but you have so many other things
AP> you can contribute than worrying about such mundane things like
 AP> nodelist distribution.

A nodelist is the phonebook of FidoNet. If that phonebook is
not kept up to date, and is inaccurate, it is of little or no use
to anybody. Imagine trying to use a phonebook from the 60s when
trying to contact friends in the town where you live. Most of
the numbers you dial would no longer be in service. Others
would be the wrong number. And many of those you tried to call
would simply no longer be living in the same area, if they are
still alive at all.

AP> And Joe I absolutely disagree with you, anyone who posts to Fidonet
AP> is TOTALLY a part of fidonet.

Sysops and users post messages in FidoNet, not just one or the
other. As such, both are part of FidoNet, and will always remain
a part of FidoNet, both now and in the forseeable future.

LL>> A sysop is free to do whatever the hell he/she wants with his/her
LL>> own system, regardless of what you or anybody else might want to say
 LL>> or do about it.

AP> True .. Tom jennings did say that... he also said this...

AP> FidoNet is run completely by volunteers, from saints to evil
AP> power mongers, with most people somewhere in the middle, closer
AP> to the saintly end of things.

 AP>                              == Tom Jennings

We are all both saints and sinners. Not a single one of us is one
or the other. We are both, even if we hate to admit it to ourselves
(or to others).

Adolf Hitler thought he was doing good for his people.
The people of Germany thought Hitler was doing good for them,
and embraced him as their beloved leader. Was Hitler evil?
Were the German people evil? By their lights, they thought
they were saints on a mission of good will.

AP> I think that what everyone is forgetting is much like you tend to call
AP> users probationary sysops... that when a sysop posts on their own
AP> system they are a USER at that point not a SYSOP.

All users are potential sysops, therefore the term probationary
sysops is far more accurate than mere "users". And without the
negative connotations.

A sysop is not a probationary sysop because a sysop is a sysop.
A probationary sysop still has a bit of a ways to go to get there.
But all are free to post messages, sysops and probationary sysops
alike.

AP> We are all USERS of our own system.

Of course, and free to do with as we like.

AP> The sysop part is totally administrative and behind the scenes... the
SYSOP
AP> part builds the infrastructure, worries about things such as how to
AP> automate the distribution of a nodelist or such technical things such as
AP> UTF-8 vs Codepage 457 (Which by the way are the hot topics in the FN_SYSOP
AP> echo right now, why you want to get in that mess is beyond me).

Some sysops (and probationary sysops) enjoy messaging. Others don't.
But all are free to do their own thing, whatever that thing is.
And that includes participating in general chat echoes, such as the
FN_SYSOP echo and FIDO_SYSOP echo.

AP> In that sense WE ARE ALL Fidonet... and I'm offended that anyone would
 AP> suggest otherwise.

Then do open your own board to ALL in regards to the FN_SYSOP echo,
as well as the FIDO_SYSOP echo. That way, you can set a fine example
for other sysops to follow. Imagine that. Allen the Leader, rather
than Allen the Follower. Has a nice ring to it ...
