I once thought about having my remains freeze dried and used for
fertilizer.  Seemed to me a better way to go than cremation, as
that would put my remains to a good use rather than a total waste.

How that differs from resomation, aquamation or alkaline hydrolisys
is not the point.  The thing is, your remains are put to a better use
rather than being a total waste.  So perhaps it is a thought worth
looking into.

I find cremation to be abhorrent on a number of levels.  Hindus do
it for religious purposes.  Muslims forbid it on religious grounds.
Christians are becoming more open to cremation than before, but not
all are accepting.

Instead of paying some company a lot of $$$$ to make my remains
useful for the soil, I can do the very same thing by using a simple
cardboard box to hold my unembalmed remains, have it placed into
the ground, and allow the worms to have a feast, with little to no
cost at all.

I would rather use burial at sea, but the US Navy will not let me
do that, and I am not a Kennedy.  So I will have to go the poor man's
route by using a cardboard box and finding a splotch of open land.

Along with a small handful of volunteers to carry my remains
to my final resting place, wherever that may be.

In Louisiana, the law says my body must be embalmed.  And that
means no natural burial can take place.  Anywhere.  As such, I have
to make myself dead someplace else.  Sometimes, one does not have
a choice in that matter.  You just go whenver the time calls you,
wherever that may be.

This is America.  Land of the free, and home of the brave.
Why can't we choose what comes after we are gone?  Why are we
denied the choices we should be allowed to make?  Even the
homeless are denied the dignity of burial, or even of having
a marker.

The homeless whose bodies are unclaimed are cremated, their
ashes scattered to the winds, the bill for cremation then sent
to their next of kin (or whatever kin can be found).  No marker
is made, and none offered.  They are lost to the world, as if
they never existed.

The bodies of undocumented workers are cremated, their ashes
sent to their next of kin (or whatever kin can be found) of the
country where they came from, along with bill for cremation.
Doesn't matter how that undocumented worker met his/her end.
Could have been a victim of terrorism, such as on 9/11.  But
if that worker was here legally, then his/her body would be
respected, and given all rights the dead deserve.

We have a sick society.  And nobody wants to fix it.

I guess we like it that way.
