HI Roy,

On Sat 2012-Sep-08 16:34, Roy Witt (1:387/22) wrote to Richard Webb:

RW> YEah think I heard of it, don't think I ever was able to sit through
RW> it though even if it was playing somewhere I was.

RW> One has to have an appreciation for classical music to enjoy
RW> Fantasia.

OH yeah, I thought i remembered lots of classical music in
that one, but wasn't sure I was recalling the right one.

RW> The talking book program used to get some fairly well known names as
RW> readers back in those days. QST came on open reel tape at first, then
RW> cassette, 4 track mono, half speed, read by Vic CLark, w4kfc, who
RW> actually understood the blind man's method of describing schematic
RW> diagrams, unlike modern qst readers who are just any old person they
 RW> can seem to grab.

Roy> Perhaps he had personal experience with a blind person in his life.
Roy> Having a 'manic depressive' in my life certainly gave me some
Roy> insight into the so-called mentally ill problems that some familys
Roy> go thru.

yEah think he was familiar with Bob Gunderson, a blind
electronics tech and teacher, and editor of the Braille
Technical PRess for decades, and its founder.

RW> I think arrl had Vic doing it somewhere else than American Printing
RW> house for the blind's studios in Louisville though, and they took
RW> some time and care with it. But, that also meant your qst came
 RW> to you months late.

Roy> Since you couldn't read it in its published format, you didn't know
Roy> what it said anyway.

YEah and they still redact the page 8 info, kind of a
bummer, but oh well.

<snip>
RW>> I actually liked Pecos Bill better
RW>> than Paul Bunyon and some of the other legends of that type.

Roy>> I had to live with legends of Paul Bunyan, since my grandfather
Roy>> lived with his family at the turn of the 20th century on a lake in
Roy>> Minnesota. Paul Bunyan was a 'must visit' feature when we went
Roy>> there to visit. No one ever believes me when I say that you can
Roy>> step across the Mississippi river head where it comes out of the
Roy>> ground as a spring near the Paul Bunyan 'real sized' statues of him
Roy>> and Babe, the Blue Ox...

RW> Yeup, been there, adn stepped across the river there <grin>. The Paul
RW> legends were fun, but pb was a bit wilder imho, and a bit more
RW> irreverent too, which was right up this wild pre-teen's alley. YOu
RW> gotta remember, I was essentially raised in a zoo about that time
RW> period, a dormitory with 30-40 boys and adult supervision that
RW> couldn't keep up even if it was provided by superman.

RW> LOL! My friend Andrew (47yo) came over for a visit last night and I
RW> had chosen a movie on TV to watch, which was about teenagers in the
RW> 1950s. He has a habit of commenting on trivial things in films and
RW> kept telling me that this or that was fake or non-compliant with the
RW> 1950s. I finally had to ask if he 'lived the 50s', because what I
RW> was seeing was damned close to what I experienced in that era. This
RW> last one was about long hair and nobody in the 50s had hair that
RW> long. Needless to say that I did! So I jumped on his shit and asked
RW> him where he got his 1950s living experience. His reply was that he
RW> saw pictures of his mom and uncle, both teens at the time. Neither
RW> of them had hair or clothes to match the 50s in those photos. I told
RW> him that his mom and uncle grew up in Minnesota, more like
RW> squaresville in that era. Which is what real teens of the time would
RW> consider farmers, aka clod hoppers...he finally shut up.

,rotfl> Can relate to that one as well.

Regards,
           Richard
