There were one or two. In comparison, there are none here,

That's the way it was with my 2x3 call in 1970...in the meantime, the FCC
has changed their licensing strategy to allow for 'vanity' calls. Most of
the 1x2 and 2x1 calls are taken and when they become available, there are
a bunch of people waiting in the wings with an application in hand.

MvdV> Five years ago, I could have exchanged it for a one letter suffix
MvdV> and I was tempted, but I figured I had my three letters for over 35
MvdV> years and people have known me as PA0MMV all that time. so I
 MvdV> decided to keep it.

My first call was WN6ABE but it only lasted for one year because the
Novice ticket I had was only good for that long. If you wanted to continue
to operate HAM radio, you had to upgrade. I didn't have the equipment at
the time and let it go. When the Novice ticket was made available again in
1976 or so, I was licensed as WD6DOI, a good CW call but not anything to
write home about. When I upgraded to Technician, the callsign structure
allowed me to change calls. N6AGT, which was ok for CW work but a tongue
twister in voice. When I upgraded to Advanced, I applied for a call change
and was issued KB6PI...I really liked that call. However, the 'vanity'
callsigns beckened and I chose K6RXT, which I like very much. Since I've
moved out of the region 6 call area to region 5, I thought it appropriate
to eventually change again to reflect the region change, so after
being here for 7 years and my license about to expire, I renewed the
vanity and K5RXT it will be. BTW, the B6 in KB6PI used to indicate the
call was issued on Baker Island, in the south Pacific ocean...I got a lot
of people wanting a QSL from that island, only to be disappointed that the
B6 calls were now issued to California.
