If only it was that simple.

There are many dangers using Facebook.  Many dangers that people
do not realize.  For example, posting a picture of your new puppy
in your family living room sofa on facebook can cause your identity
to be stolen, along with your credit to be compromised.  You see,
all of those itsy bitsy pieces of information that you freely
post about yourself - not just pictures - enables cybercriminals
to cobble together a version if you online.

Identity theft is a real problem these days.  And not just for those
who have a Facebook account.  Even in Fidonet the same dangers apply.
Why most sysops in Fidonet fail to understand this is beyond me.
Perhaps it is due to the "It won't happen to me" attitude that is
so prevalent.  Until it actually does happen.

What can you do to protect yourself from identity theft on
Facebook?  Here are a few things that can (and should) be done -

While as a matter of policy Facebook requires you to use your real
legal name, you should do what any intelligent person would do -
CHANGE Y0OUR FACEBOOK NAME.  Just a small change will do.  Instead
of calling yourse "Joe Delahaye", you could call yourself "Jay
Delaye".  Nobody would notice except yourself.

Another thing you can do is LIE ABOUT YOUR AGE.  Hell, you do
it anyway.  Especially when you meet pretty women.  So why not
do the same on Facebook?  Oh.  And one other thing.  Make sure
your birthday is always the Fourth of July, thus showing your
patriotism as an American.  Or if a Canadian, the Canadian
equivalent.

The other thing of note that should be done is NEVER REVEAL
YOUR LOCATION.  For online purposes, Canadians always live at
the North Pole.  Not anyplace else.  Cajuns live in the Swamp,
Canadians live at the North Pole.

Got that?  Good.  Now you are covered.

Oops.  I almost forgot.  One other thing -

If all else fails, DEACTIVATE YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.
