Hi, I haven't "campaigned" in Fidonet for quite some time but I would like
to be involved with the FTSC to help on a technical level with ideas or
improvements to promote Fidonet better. I'm part of that next-generation of
Sysops, but I'm prepared to bring a lot of applied-knowledge to the table if
elected into FTSC.
 
My experience with technical-aspects of Fidonet involves programming and
updating a legacy "all in one" product (mailer, tosser, editor, nodelist
compiler) called D'Bridge. The software was originally written in 1987 by
Chris Irwin. It is a very complex, huge project and involves understanding
all aspects of Fido networking because its an all-in-one product. When I
add new features, all the code from EMSI to PKT files to BinkD to litle
things like MSGID kludges has to be carefully tested and taken into
consideration to ensure compliance.
 
Despite the occasional problems I have been very actively involved in
adapting FTN advances into the code such as the BinkD protocol to transfer
mail. Bringing the internal message editor up to par with kludge line
compliance was also done. Seamless integration of Internet gating was
successfully added, to the point where you can read Fido mail on an
BlackBerry cell phone with the software. One simple command also
makes a D'Bridge system web-ready.
 
Basically in a relatively short amount of time I have taken the project
from abandonware to being Internet-ready and enthusiastically used by a
number of Fido Sysops... both on Windows and Linux. I developed a "Fido
Plug and Play" approach to allow a new Fido Sysop to be up and running
within minutes; with all the routing, scheduling, packet control information
and so on automatically configured. The tremendous amount of work put into
that feature helps a newcomer spend less time with the technical issues and
more time focused on the social aspect of Fidonet.
 
Those that know me know that I spend a great deal of time and effort into
"making Sysops happy" with products that work; I actively release updates
with the help of Fido Sysops from point-nodes to ZC. I go the extra mile
with user-level support... sometimes to the late-hours helping someone solve
a Fido technical problem. And if its my fault that caused whatever the
problem was, I work very hard on the "fix" so it solves things ASAP.
 
Although my real-life job is making me busier, I still hang on to the hobby
and promptly answer all the Email I get about technical aspects of Fido
software.
 
If accepted into the FTSC, I would like to be involved with discussions and
advancements that come up with regards to ways to simplify administration
for Sysops or help improve existing standards. When its workable and do-
able, Fidonet gets better.
