This is not an application specific issue; this is a DNS standard.  The
trailing dot indicates that the name is fully qualified.  If your system
attempts to query for "www.example.com" and that hostname does not exist, it
will proceed to append any local defined search domains, e.g.,:

  www.example.com.mydomain.org

The trailing dot indicates to the resolver that the name is already fully
qualified.  If it doesn't exist as written, the resolver will return an error.

Case is never significant in hostnames.  Lookups for "google.com" "gOoGle.com"
and "GOOGLE.COM" are equivalent.  See RFC 1035
(http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1035.html):

  Note that while upper and lewr case letters are allowed in the domain names,
no significance is attached to the case.  That is, two names with the same 
spelling but different case are to be treated as if identical.

RFC1035 allows hyphens ('-') but not dashes ('_').  It's possible this RFC has
been superceded.  I'm in a rush right now, otherwise I'd check.
