==================
ml> it _is_ in standard use in Z1 and has been since the concept of
ml> using 000- prefixed numbers in field 6 came out, period. remember
ml> me? i've been using them since before odin sorrenson and adrain
ml> walker were FTSC chairpersons :|

WD> Actually, I'm the one who introduced them during the testing of the
WD> famous 2:3000/xxx series of numbers in 1997 and 1998. That was 6-9
WD> months before the rest of the world woke-up and R46/50 were already
 WD> happily IP-ing.

it doesn't matter who introduced it, really... but thank you for doing so as it
is actually a logical method of extending the capabilities of field 6...

WD> After the testing-period it was considered by all testers to not be
 WD> a good methodology

why? no one has ever posted the actual arguments, for or against... and there's
still the fact that systems that had problems dealing with the network
beneficial enhancement that it would have brought long ago could easily have
run software on their local systems to adjust for their system's personal
needs...

WD> and hence the suite of new flags was introduced with IP-address,
WD> symbolic or static, in the 'system name field'.

those are all fine and good... the "ancient" software i use has no problem with
them and easily makes use of them... but they do no real good without decent
information in field 6 to tell it where to connect to :(

WD> This result was achieved in an open testing-environment where
WD> everybody could participate, comment, contribute and the first
WD> implementation occured in zone-2 with the full cooperation of its
 WD> wicked ZC.

;)

WD> Months later another, now deceased, ZC woke to the realities of
WD> IP-connections which he manifestly countered for as long as he
WD> could because there should only be PSTN-numbers in the nodelist
 WD> according to his opinion.

a fine example of political shenanigans preventing the network from moving
forward with the rest of the world and embracing the new technologies and
capabilities :(

WD> And that started a complete new identical "test", with a full set
WD> of 1:3000/xxx numbers, in zone-1, to test something which was
WD> already working. It produced the same gaffes as during the test
WD> here with the sole difference that they actually were introduced in
 WD> a production environment.

no... it was working in Z2... Z1 wanted to see if they might find something
that Z2 had overlooked or simply swept under the rug so as to be politically
likable :( that's one of the reasons why *I* participated in that testing... i
won't mention the fact that the software i use was also ready and able to
operate in this new and more desirable mode as well as being spread far and
wide across the network just waiting for this capability to finally come to
fruitation...

whatever the case and/or cause, it all comes down to politicians playing their
games with/against the technicians who created and maintained this hobby
network :(

everyone wants to know why the techs and developers all left, well, the above
is exactly why... and this wasn't the first time that technical enhancement was
shot down by the politicos, either... i know of more than one instance where
technicians and developers left fidonet with their middle fingers in the air
all due specifically due to politicians and their adamant refusal to allow some
new technology into fidonet :(
