======================
Mark,

ml> true... however, one of the ZCs also set a precdent by using a program to
ml> alter the nodelist in their zone...

True, the ZC who set this precedent was Ron Dwight.

ml> ... this is one of the several reasons
ml> why Z1 choose to use the 000-0-0-0-0 format until such time as something
ml> else was available...

Actually, Z1 chose nothing. It just did a number of things not giving it a
second thought what would happen in which case. And it was that way because of
the "our way or no way" mentality. I've lived through many such episodes
throughout my life, professional and non-professional, one gets used to it.

The thing is one doesn't notice that attitude as long as one is part of it,
i.e. as long as one lives within the geographical confines where that attitude
is prevalent.

ml>WD> I've been on a years long crusade against these "000-" numbers only
ml>WD> to see them replaced by "00-0" "0-00" "0-0-0" ...

ml> yes, ward... you've been on numerous crusades over the years... sadly,
ml> some of them have lead us into the shitbucket that we find ourselves in
ml> now and trying to get out of...

Please name one, and use proper argumentation.

ml> you, sir, set that precedent i speak of
ml> above and you first set it when you changed the defacto-definition of
ml> _USER_flags to include "ZC approved" when they never had to be before...

Ehr .... wrohooooong .... Ron Dwight set the precedent and it was an excellent
precedent. People at that time were filling the nodelist, which was growing out
of proportion at one time, with nonsense at an unbelievable rate.

People placed "For Sale" adds in the user-flag section, street addresses,
shoe-size ... whatever. I'm talking of a time when 20MB was the size of the
harddisc and the nodelist 3+MB. So on nodelist day one already occupied 7MB or
35% of the disc capacity for just that file. And for safety's sake you also
kept the grandfather file ... see where that gets you into the land of
"available disc space".

So, indeed, we kept the nodelist in check and as a result there is a pretty
clean situation now.

BTW, since you're such an expert on my usage of ERRFLAGS ... can you give an
approximate date, and you may be off the mark by 6 months, when it was last
used in a regular fashion? ... Make it a full year ...

ml> you posed the question, recently, to xxcarol asking about advocating ZCs
ml> altering the nodelist...

I think you have no idea what I was talking about. But you are on a witch hunt.

ml> ... however, all of this is dancing right on that old politician vs
ml> technician dance floor that has been under us for so many years... i
ml> tried and tried and tried along with some others but no... the technician
ml> doesn't know a damned thing and we politicians will shout him/them down
ml> whenever the discussion comes up...

Actually, technicians and politicians do get along quite well, contrary to what
a certain kind of outcasts may want to inspire to the Fidofamily.

You want to label me a politician? Fine ... I'll go along with that if that's
what you want it to be, despite my 38 years in the EDP world on the technical
and software-development side.

Well, shocking as it may be but I do get along quite well with e.g. Nick Andre,
he's a technician if ever you saw one. Same with Roger Nelson. Same with
Michiel Van der vlist and Bjorn Felten ... you may read sharp exchanges, but do
you read insults? I can quite easy walk through the same door with either. And
that goes for many of the politicians/technicians.

There may be a certain form of in-fighting among politicians or among
technicians ... I'll never forget e.g. the Hartman/Perriello versus Chris Irwin
disputes ...

The problem comes with the "never beens", the people who are neither politician
nor technician, envious of the status of others, whether real or perceived. The
only way they can create the illusion of participation is by making noise ...
and a lot of wind.

You want to know the real wealth of Fidonet? Re-read Bob Bashe's article in
Fidonet volume-19 issue-12 about DattelnCon-III, also referred to as
"FlashCon".

When you don't have that experience, you miss a lot.
