I am aware of that. The editor I am presently using (the one that comes with
FD) does not insert soft returns in the text but the one I have been using for
many years (the one that came with InterMail) did. I never really understood
why it does that since they are ignored on the receiving end, but that is the
way it is.

If they receiving end is set to display codepage 866. Yes, I am aware of that.
That is slightly annoying, but frankly I find Teleguard's habit of truncating
much more annoying.

OTOH I realise full well that people have strong resistance against changing
editors. I too have been scolded about the inadequacies of editores I use. In
partucular that it doesn't do quote caharcters. And yes, I was scolded about
the *8DH issue too when I still used the InterMail editor.

I have tried several alternatives, byt so far none have been satisfactory. I
had to change my mailer from InterMail 2.29 to InterMail 2.50 because of a
fatal bug in the flag handling. And because Im 2,50 usus a different format for
the compilede nodelist, I had to ugrade the Editor too. And then I found I
landed from the fire into the frying pan because aith the new version some new
annoying bugs were introduced.

Sothen I tried Megsed. It look promising at first, but then I found it would
not work with my spell checker as is took too much memory. Plus that it locked
up the Hudson message base and every once in a while it messed up all the last
read pointers. Really annoying bugs. Noiw it comes with source so in principle
I could fix the bugs myself. But that would be a MAJOR project and I don't
think I am prepaired to put that much effort into it any more.

So now I have gone back to the FD editor, But that too has some irritating
flaws. I either have to learn to live with them or look further. But the
problem is that whenever you find an alternative that seems to solve one
problem, you always run into a new incompatibility problem with existing
software. So one has to settle for something less than perfect.

The bottom line is that one can not please everyone. The perfect editor does
not exist and FidoNet does not have enough mass any more to attract capable
programmers willing to invest into writing better software.
