Ärende: Charset
===============
SD> I'm actually trying to figure out how to get GoldEd (the original) to
SD> work correctly with everyone's charsets.

Well, the best of luck to you on that adventure, but I doubt that you will
ever succeed. From all the reports I've received from GoldEd users, my definite
conclusion is, that GoldEd will never make it. Using a reader/editor that is
constantly being developed, like most mail readers are, is a much safer choice.

SD> I noticed that when you
SD> replied to Alexey that you used one charset and then when you sent out a
SD> message from your system you used another-is it normal for a reader to
SD> use the original message's charset?

   What's normal for a news reader -- like e.g. T-bird that I use -- is to use
the character set that best fits the characters used in the message. Something
that I doubt that any FTN-only editor can do.

SD> Again, I'm just learning. :) Right now, I have GoldEd set up (but not
SD> actively using) for IBMPC <-> LATIN-1 translation.

As I've pointed out several times now, the message header in FTN messages is
not translated in any way in any editor I know about. So the best choice there
is to use the character set that most operating systems have as default:
Latin-1.

Unfortunately very few (if any) news readers can differentiate the text in
the header from that in the text, so -- I'll grant Alexey that -- we still have
an unsolved problem (bug if you want) when using
JamNNTPd, since we cannot change the way our news readers work.

SD> confusion, several of the Russian speakers kindly started
SD> transliterating (?) their Cyrillic into Latin. From what I understand
SD> that isn't easy, but I don't speak nor understand Russian, so I can't say.

Indeed it is not. Not in any language. The Scandinavian languages have a
totally different take on the "umlauts" than e.g. German. Here those umlauted
characters are completely different vowels, and not just umlauted ones. They
are as different as e.g. 'e' is to 'y' -- and I guess you wouldn't be to
comfortable with having to call yourself Syan Dynnis in fidonet? :)
