Ärende: Some thoughts after the election...
===========================================
Hello Michiel!

18 Nov 09 13:12, you wrote to me:

MV>>> On this point I think I would conditionally have to agree. It
MV>>> could lead to an ivory tower only accessible to an elite.

RC>> Not if you put term limits in place, I am talking about 2 to 3
RC>> terms or something like that.

MV> Hmmm.. That would be a way to get rid of old farts that oppose all
MV> change by blocking the road with history books.....

Those whom disregard history are doomed to repeat it.

MV> But I think it is a bad idea. It would force experienced people out.

But you already expressed concern over Ivory Towers..

MV> Term limits are a typical American thing anyway. In Europe we
MV> generally do not have them. But then we can get rid of someone by a
MV> simple vote of no confidence. A system that prefer over being saddled
MV> with someone until the end of a four year term.

Fidonet is not just Europe or North America.

But since you commented, a Government that is put in place by the people that
can dissolve itself, isnt a effective govt, and just how much does it cost your
taxpayer to hold special elections?

But anyway...

RC>> Then again, you have to keep your perspective, no solution is
 RC>> going to be perfect.

 MV> I am afraid so.

Remember this..

RC>> Then again, is accessability as big of a concern, I did the INA
 RC>> thing.

MV> A perfect example of what I as a scientist and technician abhor: a
MV> technical solution for a political problem.

It wasnt political...

I had a node that was overusing existing flags within their specified usages
that broke nodelist processing and he very much wanted the system name intact
and offerred POTS, so the pots field was used..

IBN:<hishostname>:<port> and so on for all the other one million protocols he
offerred.

In fact I had to replace his hand picked NC over the matter.

But he wasnt the only one doing this, hence my suggestion that gained some
traction and whats more important, it works.

MV> A standard created by the *Cs and forced onto the network by the *C's
MV> using the nodelist as the weapon.

Would the result have changed if a non *C suggested it?

Because I will have you know that when INA went into full fledged testing that
got it off the ground, I was not the R18C at the time, Jack Yates was..

I was a *C when it got created...

MV> Putting the host name or IP address of an IP node in the system name
MV> field is a technically sound solution.

Whats wong with having other options and why do you think surrendering the
system name field will suffice just because you dont mind it?

Let them all eat cake!

MV> The introduction of the INA flag is an example that illustrates why
MV> RCs and ZCs should NOT be in the FTSC. Thank you for poiting me to it.

I didnt "poit" you to anything, you didnt like the INA idea because you felt
every one had to sacrifice their system name because you dont mind doing so for
yourself.

Let them all eat cake!

MV> Could it be that your position is jaded because you are still pissed
MV> off that when I rearranged the links for the private FTSC echo you
MV> were no longer in the path and could no longer secretly read what went
 MV> on there?

On boy, yes Michiel, you stumbled upon it, I have been exposed, you are
discovering my secret plot to rule the universe for I am really Ming The
Merciless.. ;)

RC>> and to that end, if the FTSC membership were to be the ones that
RC>> nominated and voted, could we not have the nomination process
RC>> setup that 2 other members have to second the nomination to
 RC>> prevent cronyism?

MV> Here is another item of culture. Nominating for such positions is a
MV> purely Anglo-Saxon thing. In what the British call the continent
MV> people who are interested just step forward and if they qualify they
MV> are put on the list of candidates. I know of no Dutch organisation or
MV> society where it is done different. I first heard about it when I
MV> moved to Cape Town and became a member of the local HAM society. I
MV> found it very odd and wondered why they they had this (in my eyes)
 MV> needless complication.

and yet you coordinated an election that involved nominations, it must have
been painful for you?

I didnt notice the inference you made to the way "the Dutch Do it" either..
<wink> and you accuse me of insisting things be done the USA way, heh!

Let Them All eat Cake!

RC>> However term limits by itself would be an insurance policy and
RC>> keep fresh blood waiting in the wings at all times.

MV> If that is such a good idea, why is there no limitation on the term of
MV> an RC? Or ZC? How long have you been RC? When will you step aside to
MV> make room for fresh blood? You keep harping Ward for being ZC for
MV> life, but Janis has been in the velvet seat for ages in my perception.
MV> When will the Z1 RC counsel tell here it is time for fresh blood?

You are the one whom expressed concern for the FTSC, I merely tossed a
suggestion.

We could leave things as they are and people such as myself will agree to
withhold a vote for ourselves.

MV> As I see it, limitation of terms is much more needed for th *Cs than
MV> for FTSC members. Technicians that are around for a long time, just
MV> have their reflexes slow down and they become less productive. They
MV> just become old technicians, they do no harm. Politicians OTOH gain
MV> power and as we all know power corrupts.

Deja-Vu, you arent related to Lesley-Dee Dylan are you?

But you know more about corrupting power than I, for didnt you proclaim as
policy something you never ran by the group?
