Yes, at 'least' one node as I mentioned had a problem with a manual file
attach.

I know of 3 other systems offhand that had worse problems than I described in
my original post.  Take a look in the file announcement message echos at the
'normal posters', and see who is missing from announcing the AFTNBINKD files
(not present in the echo), and who's software truncated the filenames to
something like BINKD101-MINGW32 (that's the whole filename), and
BINKD1.1A27-MING. (again, that's the filename).

Those 3 systems could not toss your release as it was distributed.  What landed
is likey unusable for all intents and purposes but I'm not testing it.. :)

Yes, there is no need for long file names.  That is what a .tic if for, for
longer descriptions of the file.  In the tic you may list the compiler used and
more :)

This is not a web site on the internet, this is fidonet. :)  Now nodes may have
and maintain web sites just like I do, but if the node cannot toss the file, it
cannot be put online.. what I've shown you are just some results.  The missing
nodes who normally announce new files are the key to who could not even toss
these files.

That text was written in 1995. (!) :)

Windows was becoming popular in Fidonet around then, and I'm sure that is why
that document was written the way it was.  Allfix for Windows could probably
convert a long file name to something like:
'verylongfilenamewithmvc-compiler.zip' to 'verylon~.zip'.

Those filenames still expand on some systems, so that is no answer at all. We
still have several OS/2 systems online in Fidonet and they had problems as
well.

You've answered my question whether you realize it or not <grin>.  We will and
have started converting the released files to 8X3 so that everyone in fidonet
can receive them, regardless of the OS or software used (this is how fidonet
used to be <grin>).

I'm just sorry we have to do this.  It shouldn't have to be this way.  It would
be a simple thing to release 8X3 filenames.  JMHO.
