Spot on correct, but for reasons likely not too many later Fidocubs will likely
understand.  A lot of folks I suspect think that DOS is a gone item all over
the world and beyond.  But not so.  If anyone here will look in the latest Ham
Radio postings in FidoNet, you can see the just a few days ago plea for anyone
with old DOS computer hardware that can be made available to ship out to
Africa!  So as to even get children of today started toward the technical world
and encourage them to begin to pursue what they SHOULD be dreaming about,
technology.  Even though in a whole pile full of human populated places, there
are no such things as 'cell phones', what most of us folks 'know' as WIFI and
all the like.  Frankly, under certain conditions even all we know about today
that is 'computer' oriented may well be down the drain in an instant.  Sure,
copper wired DOS boxes of old are a risk. But at the same time, even if you
can't 'normally' network stuff after an EMP pulse, or worse, a Solar Flare like
the old Carrington Event back in the USA in 1859, just two years after the
Golden Spike was driven that put the final touch to the first railway totally
across the USA.

Look it up.  That, today, X6-7 level Solar Flare burned up ALL the telegraph
sounders in the whole USA.  Per what my learning is, it killed three humans
that were sending Morse Code, the only yap of the times,  It put 23 more of
them in the hospitals.  Plus, where it arced from the railroad rails down to
the Earth over the wooden cross ties, in twelve places it even set the corss
ties on fire!

As part of the ORIGINAL FidoNet creation game back in the 300/1200 baud modem
game, -LONG- before the Internet ever even existed, I was already beginning to
put together a way to even merge Fido with ham radio or even Military short
wave digital stuff, together with the undergronnd telephone lines that still
serve Fido 1:117/3000 today, back in even the 1970's plus. So that if for some
reason in the Cold War, even if Texas A&M or the College Station/Bryan, Texas
area got hit with an evil EMP pulse, or a Solar Flare like the Carrington
Event, we'd even have SOME way to carry RTTY or digital total emergency needs
anywhere in the world by HF or even VHF.  The entire EOC stuff I personally
designed was even proofed over FIDONET back then all over the USA in Field Day
to prove we even could maybe save this or that by ham radio MARS communications
if needed and that was the only way left for us humans.  I even still have the
personal thank you letter from the ARRL to me for creating that vector for true
emergency services by us hams, of which I STILL could do that even today if
needed.

The heaviest rainfall at my W5WQN site in 24 hours was one hurricane pass when
we took 29 inches of rainfall in one day ALL OVER the area between here and
down almost to Beaumont,  It took TWO WEEKS to even restore telephone service
to a HUGE number of normal people and even medical sites.

To this day, technically on a PVT basis, by agreement with a serious interface
from even Fido, I still have a large group of medical sites which COULD call in
and even horribly slowly say something.  Even if ALL the cell phone service was
gone.  And by 'agreement' those sites could still be even using DOS with 8 X 3
format file names to do this.  By 'agreement' one has to serve by handling even
back into the 1980's formats as needed, which I CAN still do.  Heavan forbid,
but then ,,,,

I know certain folks would love to be all powerful to only do what is their way
of doing whatever so that old folks go off and die or whatever.

But seriously, the 8 X 3 file name operation is still needed, will be, and
should be a way even the Fido doggie should be able to bark yet.  Even if it is
very quiet and has an outbound/inbound way to tether up even a leash line that
will carry it up to the heavans, if needed.
