No, it is not necessary true that a webserver delivers all that. Though there's
a FGHI-compatible gate in the Web that grants access to the 2:5019/40 message
base (for example, anyone can append 'http://fghi.pp.ru/?' prefix to a FGHI URL
and use http://fghi.pp.ru/?area://ftsc_public/?mid=2:292/624.1+44611805 to see
your echomail letter right now), I envisioned that local Fidonet browsers with
support for hypertext are also possible. You know what I mean... such local
pieces of Fidonet software that open an echomail letter when you click on an
'area://...' hyperlink, and open a netmail composer when you click on a
'netmail:...' hyperlink, and so on.

And that's not just a vision now; there are hypertext Fidonet browsers that
start to implement some parts of FGHI URL standard.

For example, Trooper (Alexey Bezugly, 2:5030/1520.9) recently reported that his
HellEd (a .NET-based Fidonet browser and editor that includes Mozilla engine as
an ActiveX component) has limited support of FGHI URLs, it opens a netmail
composer when the user follows a 'netmail:' hyperlink, and it opens an echomail
area if an 'area://' hyperlink is followed, but it still lacks support of some
of the optional parameters of Fidonet URLs, and for the rest of the schemes
(echomail:, areafix:, faqserv://, fecho://, freq://).

NoSFeRaTU (Konstantin Kuzov, 2:5019/40.1) is modding GoldEd+; his modification
treats area:// URLs in a way that official GoldEd+ treats http:// (and other
URLs introduced by RFC 1738), i.e. NoSFeRaTU's GoldEd+ opens a new window of
the default Web browser installed in the system. Then NoSFeRaTU's GoldEd+ loads
the URL though the above mentioned 2:5019/40 FGHI-compatible Web gate. However,
unlike HellEd, NoSFeRaTU's GoldEd+ is still an alpha version never released to
the public.

I expect the increase of activity around the implementations of the hypertext
Fidonet, because on March 5, 2007 Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev (First Deputy
Prime Minister, First Deputy Chairman of the Council for Implementation of the
Priority National Projects attached to the President of the Russian Federation,
and Chairman of the Council's Presidium; also he's the chairman of Gazprom's
board of directors), during his recent Internet conference (see transcript at
http://vopros.yandex.ru/db/answers.xml), said 'big thanks to Sergey Sokoloff'
and acknowledged that Fidonet lacks hypertext. (Some freak in the Internet used
my name to sign the question about hypertext Fidonet for the conference. The
impersonation was not unusual in the question category 'Computers and Internet
in school' related to one of the Priority National Projects; for example,
someone signed as Linus Torvalds the question about the excessive use of the
proprietary software at school.)

That's why a standard for Fidonet URLs is important to prevent discord and
disharmony. That's why I published my draft here at FTSC public echo and I am
about to ask finally whether it's possible for my v0.3 draft to become a FSP
just by changing the revision to 1.0 and by some other appropriate changes in
its heading, or does the document still lack something more essential and
important? What do you think?
