I am not sure whether I understand what kind of a backwards compatibility you
mean, Maurice. If the letters you received from Carol were parts of my draft
standard of Fidonet URLs, then they define an URL-like way to address messages,
files and other resources in Fidonet. There was nothing like that in Fidonet
before to be backwards compatible with.

However, I did my best to make FGHI URLs very much compatible with RFC 1738,
in order for Fidonet URLs to become at least as usable in the Web as nowadays
Web URLs are usable in Fidonet.

Making Fidonet a hypertext network, however, would require not only URLs, but
also at least a markup language. As I can see below, you also think of some
changes in message format and tossing (echo processing). For me that's another,
and probably independent, layer. Fidonet URLs may appear in plain text and in
hypetext messages, though hypertext messages require a standard for URLs. But
both for plain text and for hypertext it is possible to be sent over existing
Fidonet communications, without changes in message formats and/or tossers.
