Ärende: Fidonet URL syntax
==========================
And about 02:31 23 Mar 07 it was written from Alex Kocharin to Mithgol the
Webmaster:

MtW>> In current Internet practice they distinguish between
MtW>> delimiters ":" and "://". The delimiter "://" is often used after
MtW>> scheme names that designate objects and resources ("http://",
 MtW>> "ftp://", "gopher://", "nntp://", "ed2k://", "file://", etc.).
MtW>> The delimiter ":" is often used after scheme names that
MtW>> designate actions (e.g. "mailto:", "skype:").

AK> Why we should look at practice of some othernet?

Look, Alex, you know no worse than I that people flee to the Web from Fidonet.
And each of us also has to dive into the Web each time the hyperlink starting
from http:// appears in Fidonet. It has always been a one-way road. FGHI URLs
are able to change that; I expect Fidonet URLs to appear in the Web ÄÄ inviting
more and more people to read Fidonet and eventually to join our net if they are
interested. I expect dozens of thousands of users fleeing to the hypertext
Fidonet because of its advantages, as some working people fled from USA to USSR
in early 1930s. However, the current migration trend is never going to reverse
if the Fidonet URLs would have incompatibilities with Web traditions/practices.

Also it's weird to see 'Why we should look at practice of some othernet?'
argument from the correspondent who just wrote the following in an adjacent
letter:

ac>> His main point was that using "/" to separate parameters is more
ac>> human-readable. However, "/" is not normally associated with the use
ac>> of optional parameters in URLs.

AK> We shall simply show echoes as directories, and threads as
 AK> subdirectiries of the site.

AK> Apache's mod_rewrite can send all of this parameters to one script.

There you effectively denied the need for Fidonet URLs (where 'U' stands for
Uniform), and evangelized different names of the same message on different Web
gates of the same echomail. Don't you understand that Fidonet URLs are not only
for Web gates? Fidonet browsers are intended to use those URLs in Fidonet
internally. Just the fact that a gate in Smolenks supports Fidonet URLs doesn't
mean that Fidonet URLs are intended for gates only. The same hypelink must be
usable both for Fidonet users (who have internal Fidonet means of access to the
designated resource) and for non-users (if they have external means of access,
such as numerous mutually compatible Web gates).

SL>>> Also, no FTN domain support?

MtW>> There is FTN domain support in the relevant schemes ('netmail:',
MtW>> 'faqserv://', 'freq://') and optional parameters for some other
 MtW>> schemes

 AK> Why?

Why what?

MtW>> (parameter 'uplink=' for 'areafix:' scheme, parameter 'from='
MtW>> for 'area://' scheme). Each of those includes '@<domain>' value.

 AK> Why?

Why what? Are you going to say we don't need Fidonet domains at all?

With best Fidonet 2.0 regards,
Mithgol the Webmaster. [Real nodelisted name: Sergey Sokoloff]
