Ärende: Re^5: FidoML
=====================
ML> fidonet is more advanced that the internet even though most
ML> folk don't want to understand or believe that... fidonet uses
ML> binary methods of transfer whereas the majority of internet
ML> protocols encode everything 7bit clean... fidonet has the ability
ML> to attach a file to a message... that file and the message are
ML> seperate entities... on the internet, email can carry an attached
ML> file but it is actually embedded within the message in either
 ML> UUEncode or MIME format...

 sl> we're going back to a text based communication system -> Soap/Xml
sl> are very bandwidth taking protocols...

i don't know anything about them... don't know that i care to... i'd rather see
things more to more simplicity than more convolution...

sl> problem with netmail-attachments is that if you send an attachment
sl> to 2 people... the attachment will be kill/sent by default...
sl> the first one that polls gets the attachment...

that is due to a logic error in the mailer(s)... the file should not be killed
if it is still referenced by other netmails... this problem also appears with
fileecho distributions... it has been seen more often in BSO format mailers
than dynamic like frontdoor but both styles have had their share of problems in
this area...

sl> and if someone sends a document.doc... and another one wants to
sl> send a document.doc ... problems arise in "binary fido"...

that is when the mailer should be renaming the file on its local storage and
keeping up with it as well as what the real name should be when transmitted to
the remote system(s)... that is not a big problem... it is, however, another
logic bug in the mailer(s)...

ML> yes, there are protocols that do transfer binary data in binary mode...
ML> ftp being the first and foremost... everything other than chat, email,
ML> news, ftp and telnet are basically little more than modifications of one
ML> of those that rides within a seperate "wrapper"... the real history of

sl> I believe it's all "telnet" on the internet... even the
sl> "controller" port of ftp (21/tcp?) untill you set type on
sl> Binary...and get the file via port 20/tcp (data?)

in real basics, yes... they all started life as plain text command
structures... it was a lot easier to code and debug, for one thing... even
today, one can, if one knows what one is doing, telnet to a SMTP mailer and
manually create the entire message... i've done it more than one time and will
continue to do so when i have to prove a point about that ability ;)

ML> ever had anything to do with fidonet... paul has made great
ML> contributions to the internet and, back in the day, also some to
ML> fidonet but no one will ever see anything about that mentioned...
ML> to even try to broach the subject will generally be met with
ML> vehement denial... such is life...

sl> Like Vince Pierello? he created binkleyterm together with Bob
sl> hartman and several fossil drivers I believe. He went working with
sl> Microsoft to develop Windows 95... He spent 10 years at Microsoft
sl> ... developing middleware components of Ms Exchange... Currently
sl> he's a Technology&Data Services manager at the Nationalle Corvette
sl> Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky...

yes, vince is another one... however, i don't know how he views his historical
fidonet presence ;)
