DUCT-TAPED TEACHER HEATS UP FUND DRIVE

PERRY TWP.:  A Perry High School fund-raiser didn't go as planned.

But all's well that ends well, especially concerning the health of
physics teacher Nate Van Wey.  The "star" of the Student Council project
to raise funds to send students to Boys and Girls State, the tall, lean
Van Wey passed out at about 11:20 a.m. yesterday as he was being fastened
with duct tape to the cafeteria's "Panther Wall," where a ferocious-
looking Perry mascot is painted.

The idea was to see whether the tape would hold him to the wall once
3-foot-high portable stairs on which he was standing were removed.

He had been on the stairs for about 80 minutes when he overheated because
the duct tape kept his body heat from escaping through his clothing.

Doctors said the incident could have proved fatal to the 49-year-ld
former Stark County Teacher of the Year had students and staff not acted
quickly when he collapsed.

"Absolutely, that could have proved fatal," said Dr. Laura Dollison, an
emergency room physician at nearby Doctors Hospital, when told of the
incident.

Dollison said hyperthermia (or overheating) could have resulted from
standing for a long time, with body heat unable to evaporate from the
skin.

"He probably had a significant loss of fluid and electrolytes," she said.
"The quick action of those around him to remove the tape was paramount in
reviving him so his skin could breathe again,"

Stark County Coroner James R. Pritchard agreed with Dollison about the
danger of duct tape in such a project.

"It's possible to become overheated where enough of the body was taped so
that the heat couldn't escape from normal evaporative processes," said
Pritchard.  "You'd lose some heat from exposed body areas and from
breathing, but not necessarily enough to keep this from happening."

"I had so much tape, I just got hotter and hotter and hotter," said Van
Wey, who had 92 pieces of tape holding him to the wall when he collapsed.
"I don't know what happened at the end because I went out.  They told me
later that the tape held."

Student Council members were charging $1 for each piece of duct tape as
long as your arm.  As the bearded 28-year Perry physics teacher stood on
the portable steps during the lunch period, the tape was applied over his
Perry sweat shirt and pants covering his arms, chest and legs.

Student Council President Chris Warfield said Van Wey was to stand with
arms extended to see how much duct tape it would take to hold him to the
wall once the steps were removed at the end of the 2 1/2-hour tape sale.

Nicknamed "Nate Van Swami" for the project, Van Wey would foretell
victory for Perry in tonight's Division I state playoff quarterfinal game
against Pickerington at Mansfield if he remained on the wall.  The winner
goes to the semifinals in the state playoffs.

If "Swami" came off the wall, Warfield said before the event, ... "well,
we really don't want to think about that."

Principal James Hodinka said Van Wey "was just soaking wet" from the heat
building up inside his clothing as the tape -- a half-inch thick in some
areas -- blocked normal heat escape routes.

"I'm just glad he's feeling better now that he has eaten a little and
drank some water," Hodinka said afterward.  "We don't believe it was
anything too serious.  He chose to return to the classroom for afternoon
classes."

The principal said that Jan Zak, a registered nurse who teaches
medical-tech prep classes at the high school, recognized the symptoms of
overheating and took care of Van Wey.

Because the tape held, Hodinka is transferring $100 from the student
activity account to the Student Council as pledged when he approved the
fund-raiser.
