During my deployment with MCB6 in Chu Lai South VietNam, I spend
several month doing record keeping in the "A" Company shop office.
We worked 'round the clock, so there were almost always several
people in the building.  Being military, the place was * never *
supposed to be unguarded.  On day I drew the duty during lunch time
on a day that a better than average menu was offered.  In the
entire place, only I and the tool room man were there.

The tool room man came to my office area and asked, "What do we
do if there is a fire?"  Of course I asked, "Is there a fire?"

Well there was.  He had noticed a flickering as he walked by the
crack in the door of the supply/parts room.   Supply was operated
by a different chain of command than we mechanics, and we had no
keys to the padlock on the chain that held the doors shut. I
looked through the gap, and saw burning insulation dripping from
an electrical wire over a desk, and papers on the desk burning.

I called the OOD, and informed him of the fire and requested the
fire department.  The two of us went out back, and pulled the circuit
breaker on the generator to depower the burning wires, and went back
in to wait.  Nothing happened for another ten minutes and the fire
was spreading.  The tool guy brought out a pair of bolt cutters, and
asked me if we should break in.  I took the cutter, cut the chain,
and with a fire extinguisher, we put out the fire.  Ten minutes after
we were done, the men began to return, ask what happen, and mill about.

Then the fire truck came roaring into the shop area.  They were out
to lunch, and the person with duty at the OOD's didn't think to send
someone to fetch them.  The store keepers returned, looked at the
mess in there area and began grumbling.

Later that afternoon the NCO in charge of the stores called me in,
and told me that he was going to put me on disciplinary report for
cutting his chain and entering an unauthorized area.  I asked him
who was in charge of that area during the fire.  Then I said to go
ahead, I would welcome a chance to tell my side of the story to
the Commanding Officer.  Remember, at the start I mentioned that
the military left nothing unguarded?  Legally as the senior man
present, I was in charge of *his* area during the fire, and *he*
was remiss in leaving the area unguarded.  That was the end of any
threats against me, he thought he was going to get something
against me to hold over me, but it backfired.
